DHA And Brain Development – What’s The Connection?

What if I told you DHA and brain development have a very close connection? This is something that even the conventional medicine has accepted now. Let’s take a look now at exactly what this nutrient does for our brain.

To understand the link between DHA and brain development, it’s enough to know the fact that 60% of our brain is made up of fats. Out of this, almost half is DHA Omega 3 fats. So you can see now how closely DHA and the structure of our brain are related.

If there is deficiency of DHA in the body, it will surely affect the health and the performance of the brain. Lower levels of this fat have been linked to depression and mood swings. Taking more DHA can help in keeping Alzheimer’s at bay, and improve the memory and learning capabilities of a person.

In children, DHA deficiency can lead to a lower IQ, ADHD and behavioral problems later in childhood.

In fact, it’s recommended that pregnant mothers also take DHA to facilitate the proper development of the child’s brain.

Now, there are two ways you can take this nutrient.

One – You directly eat fish rich in DHA as a part of your daily diet.

Two – You take a fish oil supplement that contains DHA.

Which one to choose?

Here’s the problem with eating fish directly. It is not so easy to eat fish everyday, unless you really have a taste for it. It’s safe to say, it’s going to be difficult for most people.

Also, there is a risk of ingesting plenty of contaminants from the fish. If the fish is caught from an area where the water is really polluted, and let’s face it – there aren’t many places left where it isn’t – the fish would absorb the impurities from the water.

These contaminants would then make their way into your body when you eat the fish.

DHA and brain development – the right way
Taking a supplement can help you avoid all these problems. Taking just a couple of pills of the concentrated oil would be enough to provide your body adequate amount of DHA fat.

The oil would also have been properly refined by the manufacturer, so you don’t have to worry about contaminants in it.

In conclusion, a high quality oil containing DHA and brain development, go hand in hand. You just need to choose the right one. Visit my website to find out how.

''Safety first'': Childhood maltreatment, attachment, and cognitive processing: A mediation model.

”Safety first”: Childhood maltreatment, attachment, and cognitive processing: A mediation model.

$49.99

Childhood maltreatment is a pervasive problem, with severe developmental consequences across multiple domains. A growing body of empirical evidence indicates that there are critical periods in childhood during which the experience of maltreatment has a profound impact on the developing brain. The developing brain drives cognitive, emotional, social, and psychological development and functioning; thus, understanding the relationship among environmental interactions and the subsequent impact on childhood neurodevelopment can provide insights into how the maltreated child self-regulates social and emotional experiences (such as attachment and interpersonal relationships) and processes information (such as auditory verbal information within social and therapeutic relationships). Those insights can inform the design of more effective treatment approaches for maltreated children that promise to more effectively reduce the long-term impact of the multiple developmental sequelae associated with maltreatment.;This dissertation investigates the interface between childhood relational maltreatment, attachment, and cognitive processing, specifically: auditory and language processing. A sample of 117 incarcerated male adolescents, mean age of 17, from a Midwestern detention center participated in a survey study. The central hypothesis of this study was that attachment acts as a mediator between early relational maltreatment and later deficits in cognitive processing, deficits that then have negative consequences to the social and emotional functioning.;A Structure Equation Modeling strategy was utilized to examine the role of attachment and cognitive processing deficits in child relational maltreatment. A significant relation was revealed between attachment on auditory processing as well as internalizing and externalizing behaviors including withdrawal, anxiety, social problems, and aggression. However, when attachment was held constant, the relation between child relational

A Good Start in Life: Understanding Your Child’s Brain and Behavior

$14.13

The social and cognitive development of children is a complex yet crucial process for parents to understand, and though there are numerous books on child development, A Good Start in Life stands out from the rest as an acclaimed and important work on the connections between childhood brain and behavioral development. This new paperback edition, updated with the latest information and new material, offers parents and educators a rich and invaluable resource on how children learn to live in family and society from birth to age six. Norbert Herschkowitz, MD, and his wife Elinore Chapman Herschkowitz draw on their lifetime of experience in studying infants and children to explain how brain development shapes a child’s personality and behavior. Organizing their narrative by age, the authors examine a wide range of social development issues, from appropriate rule-setting to the development of key character elements in a child such as moral sensibility, temperament, language development, playing, aggression, impulse control, and empathy. Some of the most popular features of the hardcover edition are retained here, including the question-and-answer section that concludes each chapter with real questions posed by parents to Dr. Herschkowitz, as well as brain maps and charts that display milestones in the development of various skills. Additional new material addresses concerns about prematurely born babies and the issue of resilience in children. In today’s world, children grow up in an incredibly complex and highly sensory environment. A Good Start in Life offers a clear, concise, and richly detailed guide infused with warmth and encouragement that enables parents and educators toconstructively stimulate and shape their children’s cognitive and social development. A Good Start in Life: Understanding Your Child’s Brain and Behavior from Birth to Age 6

$13.95

A Good Start in Life offers a clear, concise, and richly detailed guide infused with warmth and encouragement that enables parents and educators to constructively stimulate and shape their children’s cognitive and social development.“A must read . . . a gift to all parents.”—Rosemarie T. A History of Psychology in Autobiography

A History of Psychology in Autobiography

$54.02

The latest installment in the History of Psychology in Autobiography series takes readers through the personal and intellectual journeys of nine eminent people whose research has propelled the field of psychology into the 21st century. Each featured psychologist narrates how historical circumstances, collaborations, internal struggles, and public conflict led him or her to choose and develop various lines of research. Over the past 50 years, psychology has expanded from behaviorism and psychoanalysis into cognitive and social theories of learning and brain-based models of behavior and memory. Contributors to this volume document their role in these and other movements, including personality theory and assessment and child development. Editors Gardner Lindzey and William M. Runyan have brought together a collection of essays that put a human face on the maturing science of psychology.

A Map of the Child: A Pediatrician's Tour of the Body

A Map of the Child: A Pediatrician’s Tour of the Body

$17.99

During his residency at the legendary Children’s Hospital in Boston, a young doctor explores the inner workings of a child’s bodyDr. Darshak Sanghavi has learned to read the body-to recognize patterns of sickness, apply modern medical technology when warranted, and to offer comfort through human contact, all vital skills when working with patients who are often too young or too ill to speak. In this compelling book, he shares his experiences by taking the reader on a dramatic tour of a child’s eight vital organs, beginning with the lungs and proceeding through the heart, blood, bones, brain, skin, gonads, and gut.Along the way, we meet children and families in extraordinary circumstances, such as a premature baby named Adam Flax who was born with undeveloped lungs, a Japanese infant with a blockage in his heart, a young girl who sees ghosts and grows too fast, a teenage boy with a positive pregnancy test, and a young girl who keeps losing weight despite her voracious appetite. Using such stories as windows on the wonders and tragedies of human biology, the author examines the development and inner workings of children’s bodies from birth through adolescence. In a deeply personal narrative, Sanghavi comes to terms with the great advances and continued limitations of modern medicine, even as he provides a richly detailed-and humanized-portrait of how the pediatric body functions in sickness and health.

 Attention, Genes, and Developmental Disorders

Attention, Genes, and Developmental Disorders

$49.95

What is attention? How does it go wrong? Do attention deficits arise from genes or from the environment? Can we cure it with drugs or training? Are there disorders of attention other than deficit disorders? The past decade has seen a burgeoning of research on the subject of attention. This research has been facilitated by advances on several fronts: New methods are now available for viewing brain activity in real time, there is expanding information on the complexities of the biochemistry of neural activity, individual genes can be isolated and their functions identified, analysis of the component processes included under the broad umbrella of "attention" has become increasingly sophisticated, and ingenious methods have been devised for measuring typical and atypical development of these processes, from infancy into childhood, and then into adulthood. In this book, Kim Cornish and John Wilding are concerned with attention and its development, both typical and atypical, particularly in disorders with a known genetic etiology or assumed genetic linkage. Tremendous advances across seemingly diverse disciplines – molecular genetics, pediatric neurology, child psychiatry, developmental cognitive neuroscience, and education – have culminated in a wealth of new methods for elucidating disorders at multiple levels, possibly paving the way for new treatment options. Cornish and Wilding use three specific-yet-interlinking levels of analysis: genetic blueprint (genotype), the developing brain, and the behavioral-cognitive outcomes (phenotype), as the basis for charting the attention profiles of six well-documented neurodevelopmental disorders: ADHD, autism, fragile X syndrome, Down syndrome, Williams syndrome, and 22q11 deletion syndrome. Their overarching aim in this book is to provide the most authoritative and extensive account to date of disorder-specific attention profiles and their development from infancy through adolescence.

Autism: A Neurological Disorder of Early Brain Development

Autism: A Neurological Disorder of Early Brain Development

$125.95

Written by child neurologists, this comprehensive, multi-authored volume on autism systematically discusses the classification, epidemiology and neurobiology of autism. Autism lacks a unique etiology or specific pathology, so the behaviorally defined social deficits, language impairments and repetitive behaviors that define autism are explored from a developmental neurology perspective. The evidence suggesting that autism is a disorder of neuronal development is reviewed by experts on the genetics, neuroanatomy and neuroradiology, neurochemistry, immunology, and neurophysiology of autism. Chapters provide comprehensive reviews of the common neurological problems associated with autism such as epilepsy, sleep disturbances and motor and sensory deficits. Neuropsychological assessment, medical and psychopharmacologic management, educational and behavioral interventions, and outcome are discussed within the clinical content of the practising neurologist. The research agenda needed to understand the neurology of autism is emphasized throughout the book and in the conclusion.

Before Their Time: The World of Child Labor

Before Their Time: The World of Child Labor

$35

Physician and photographer David L. Parker takes us beyond the headlines and into the textile factories, stone quarries, and garbage dumps where children are forced—by unscrupulous adults or by lack of any other economic opportunity—into the desperate cycle of child labor. His haunting and sensitive portrayal of these children preserves their dignity and humanity while exposing their often tragic circumstances. The hazards of harsh working conditions are visited exponentially on still-growing bodies and minds, whether they are cleaning elephant stables in India, picking cotton in Turkey, or extracting gold from Nicaraguan mines. Mercury used in mining causes brain damage; stone dust destroys young lungs; circus contortions cause serious muscular harm. But even beyond the disastrous physical consequences of child labor, simply having to work means that children are deprived of the education, nurturing, and socialization that are the necessary foundations of lasting health, development, and progress.Dr. Parker’s riveting portraits of children continues in the brave documentary tradition of Lewis Hine, Milton Rogovin, and Sebastião Salgado, who have contributed to the legal and humanitarian advances of previous generations. We can only hope, as Hine said in the early twentieth century, that one day soon heartbreaking images like these will simply be “records of the past.” Until then, Before Their Time is an essential call to action.
