Types Of Child Development

Recognizing the 4 Types of Child Abuse
Fundamentally there are four primary types of child abuse, each varying greatly in severity, and the symptoms are not always easy to notice. Although much is currently being done in an attempt to break the abuse cycle, this societal problem persists, and will most likely do so for quite some time. Outlined below are the four major categories of child abuse, and the possible resulting symptoms to look out for.
Physical Abuse
Physical child abuse basically consists of inflicting physical injuries on a child. Whether intentional or unintentional, injury to a child resulting from direct physical contact can be considered physical abuse.
There is a distinct difference between physical abuse and physical corrective punishment. Physical abuse refers to injuring a child as a result of physical aggression. However, physical punishment is limited to the use of physical force as a corrective measure to inflict temporary pain, but not injury.
Children who have been physically abused tend to be very timid in the presence of their abuser. Some other symptoms might include a strong resistance to return home, general fear of adults, or any physical manifestation of possible abuse such as bruises, burns, bite marks, cuts or welts.
Sexual Abuse
This type of abuse can take many forms and is often one of the most difficult types to anticipate. Sexual abuse is any sexual act between an adult and a child, and this is not just limited to intercourse. Any form of incest, display of pornography, rape, fondling, or commercial exploitation through child prostitution or child pornography constitutes sexual abuse to a child.
Possible signs that a child has been abused sexually include: an inappropriate interest in sexual acts or subject matter, seductive behavior, strong avoidance or rejection of sexuality in general, or an intense fear of a specific person or member of the family.
Emotional Abuse
Also known as mental abuse, verbal abuse, or psychological abuse, this form of abuse is often present alongside all other forms of child abuse, and can have much more detrimental and long-lasting effects than the other types. Emotional abuse is attitude, behavior or failure to act that conflicts with a child’s mental well-being or development. Children who are chronically subjected to verbal insults or are often made fun of can exhibit some disturbing behavior after a time.
Neglect
Child neglect is most likely the most widespread form of child abuse. There are more children who suffer from neglect than from physical and sexual abuse combined, yet it is an extremely difficult condition to identify because of its nature as a form of inaction. Instead of directly committing an offense against a child, neglect involves parents or guardians taking no action to ensure the well-being of the child. Neglect can often be linked with emotional abuse. Children who habitually wear dirty or unsuited clothing, and are regularly unclean or hungry are a likely candidate for this form of abuse.
Private investigators often have substantial experience and expertise in this area. If you suspect that child abuse or neglect is taking place in your home, or in someone else’s, an experienced private investigator may be able to provide assistance.

”If you give Allison a book…”: A toddler’s aesthetic responses to literature experiences. $49.99 This case study narrates the depth and breadth of aesthetic responses to literature demonstrated by Allison between the ages of twenty and thirty months. By exploring and analyzing ways in which Allison was engaged in literacy experiences I provide insight into the types of responses to literature that are possible, especially from very young children. Observational data in the form of anecdotal and analytic journal entries was recorded and used to provide information about the following three research questions: What types of social practices encapsulate Allison’s experiences with literature? In what ways is Allison involved in aesthetic transactions with texts? What kind of literature is appealing to Allison and other toddlers?;Patterns emerged from a retrospective, thematic analysis of the entries. Allison’s aesthetic responses to literature were categorized into the following five types: Socially Constructed Responses, Dramatic Responses, Emotional Responses, Responses that Explore a Child’s World, and Intertextual Responses. The theoretical framework for this study drew largely on prior studies in the field of emergent literacy, reader response theory, and aesthetics. This study’s findings inform an understanding of early literacy development, literature discussion, and response issues in schools.;Conclusions are as follows: Allison’s experiences with text were imbedded within the social practices of her family; background knowledge and prior experiences informed her responses by providing points of reference for her to appreciate and enjoy literary experiences; and enriched, aesthetic responses to literature are possible as rich, life experiences are called upon through interpersonal interactions. Drama, including role-play, engaged Allison in exploring aesthetics and aesthetic practices, was an opportunistic venue for Allison to aesthetically respond to literature beyond the limits of her expressive language skills, and was a powerful medium through which |

Anatomy of Motive: The FBI’s Legendary Mindhunter Explores the Key to Understanding and Catching Violent Criminals $7.99 The Barnes & Noble Review Every crime is a mystery story with a motive at its heart. Understand the motive, and you can solve the mystery. In The Anatomy of Motive — the eagerly anticipated book from the international bestselling authors of Mindhunter, Journey into Darkness, and Obsession — legendary FBI agent John Douglas explores the development and evolution of the criminal mind. From seemingly ordinary men who suddenly kill their families to dedicated murderers who embark on serial-killing sprees, Douglas helps readers understand what precipitates violent sociopathic behavior. He shows how criminals use and react to the media and how the motives behind hijacking and terrorism evolved through history. Douglas identifies the common precursors to the violent antisocial personality, revealing the astonishing similarities and differences among various types of offenders, including arsonists, hijackers, bombers, poisoners, and serial and mass murderers. He also profiles notorious assassins — Lee Harvey Oswald, Theodore Kaczynski, and Timothy McVeigh — examining that select personality and how it applies to the particular type of crime. As Douglas explained in an earlier chat on barnesandnoble.com regarding his grisly career, “I was always interested in why criminals particularly do the things that they do. In simple language, what was their motivation, how did they perpetrate the crime, and particularly, why did they perpetrate the crime? I found myself in prisons asking those questions of murderers, rapists, and child molesters. What was surprising tomewas that many people working in the mental-health profession never concern themselves or want to know the answers to those questions…. This has been my obsession and my mission, to try to change the way people look at and treat violent offenders.” With The Anatomy of Motive, |

Art programs for youth in foster care: A survey and analysis. $49.99 This paper presents an overview of the major issues affecting the more than half a million children currently living in foster care and analyzes and evaluates the typology of art making experiences for foster youth. This qualitative study, which focuses on out-of-school visual arts programs for older adolescent foster youth ages 14 to 18, has two objectives: (1) to identify and evaluate the different types of visual arts programs implemented by foster care agencies, child welfare and arts organizations, service providers and individuals to address the specific needs of foster youth; and (2) to analyze the relationship of art educational art-making experiences to expressive art-making therapies commonly provided for foster youth. This study focuses on the visual arts for older adolescents who are at risk for aging out of the foster care system. However, some of the programs with multi-arts components have useful implications for younger children and address similar needs of abused, neglected and at-risk youth.;In order to examine the connection between the arts and foster youth, this study used four sources of information: (1) data from existing scholarly research and literature on the foster care system, foster youth, art education and art therapy; (2) quantitative data on foster youth collected by government agencies and child welfare organizations; (3) qualitative data obtained directly from arts programs for foster youth; and through (4) surveys and interviews of art program directors, child welfare administrators, art educators, art therapists, artists, foster youth, foster parents and foster alumni who have experience with the visual arts.;This study exposes a dual need for art educational research on special student populations and human development research on innovative methods of developing the “well-being” of the older youth in foster care. The results would be useful to art educators and art therapists working with older youth in the foster care system; |

BIE school administrators’ perceptions of the effectiveness of the Bureau of Indian Education in supporting school improvement. $49.99 The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) mandates that states develop statewide systems of support (SSOS) focused upon improving the educational outcomes of students and on closing the achievement gap. The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) is the State Education Agency (SEA) for 184 schools and peripheral dormitories funded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and is also responsible for meeting technical assistance requirements relating to the development and implementation of school improvement plans. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions that school administrators in BIE-funded schools have in terms of the services, leadership, and types of technical support offered by the Bureau of Indian Education in regard to school improvement efforts. The study sought to identify the SEA strategies which school administrators perceive as important to supporting the school’s improvement efforts at the local level, and to analyze these perceptions by geographic location of the school, years of administrative experience, and the school’s AYP status. Based on the six specific SEA support strategies believed to impact school improvement, the study also investigated what BIE-funded school administrators perceive as the strengths and weaknesses of the current BIE SSOS. Data were collected from 52 BIE funded school administrators across the United States. A researcher-developed survey instrument using two different five-point Likert scales was used to measure respondents’ perceptions. Descriptive and inferential analyses were applied to the data resulting from the study, and included: (a) means, (b) standard deviations, and (c) one-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) using SPSS 15.0. Analyses of the data revealed that BIE administrators perceived all six of the SEA support strategies as important to supporting school improvement. There were no statistically significant differences among respondents according to geographic region or years of administrative experience. |

Children and Violence $11.67 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified youth violence as a major public health problem. What impact does exposure to violence–be it in the form of victimization, observation, or knowledge–have on young people? How do they develop a sense of morality? And how does it affect their perception of the world around them? Devoted to this crisis in American life, this volume–originally published as a special issue of the journal Psychiatry– documents the rise in violence in our communities and explores its impact on children’s physical, psychological, and social development. We know from police statistics, as well as from the evening news, that the violence in many American communities is increasing at an alarming rate. To assess the impact this may have on children, however, more detailed epidemiological data is needed. We must ascertain the types of violent acts children experience, patterns and duration of their exposure, factors that increase some children’s exposure, and factors that protect others. Reporting on studies that have been initiated in this area are three chapters that describe ground-breaking projects that are distinguished by their sensitivity to community dynamics and developmental processes. Strategies for intervention are addressed in chapters that delineate the need for immediate remedial action, describe positive effects research projects can have in volatile communities, report on the impact of an innovative intervention program, and assess the influence of television violence. Other contributions draw from research on the effects of child sexual abuse and maltreatment on children’s development to discuss specific psychologicalprocesses that may mediate negative effects, as well as risk and protective factors in the culture, community, and family. Reflecting on the implications of our culture’s violence on the early development and morality of our children, final chapters focus on the children who are cur |

Children’s Perceptions of Violence $116.99 This study examined children’s perceptions of the prevalence, incidence, and impact of violence experienced or witnessed by them and explored the factors that might mitigate and reduce its impact. A national survey of New Zealand children, aged 9 to 13 years, with a representative sample of 2,077 children from 28 randomly selected schools of various sizes, geographic areas and socioeconomic neighbourhoods was undertaken. Results showed high prevalence rates of both direct and indirect physical, emotional, and sexual violence. All types of violence involving adults were rated higher than violence involving children. The study also examined the ethical considerations and philosophy underpinning research that involves children. Guided by Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the results supported the controversial ethical decision to adopt a passive consent procedure. The study demonstrated children’s competence to express the ways in which violence has affected them. Conclusions are that effective development of policy and provision should be based on data that reflects children’s perceptions of the violence in the context of their own lives. |

Counseling Troubled Teens and Their Families: A Handbook for Pastors and Youthworkers $28 Teenagers and their families live in a society with epidemic levels of social problems that put adolescents at risk for emotional problems. Teens have special mental and emotional issues that need to be addressed by pastors and their colleagues in ministry. For this reason, clergy and caregivers need to know about the most common mental disorders that occur in adolescents, including how to assess and diagnose the disorders, what types of treatment can be initiated in the faith community, when referral is required, and to whom to make a referral. This book identifies twenty-two of the most common mental health conditions that occur among adolescents, provides illustrative cases, lists national resources available to help, and suggests when and from whom to seek additional professional help. There is an emphasis on self-help resources available on the Internet, a major source of information for teens. The conditions addressed include: various types of addiction and abuse; family crises such as pregnancy, runaways, divorce, depression, and bereavement; and other disorders such as eating disorders, ADA, schizophrenia, and learning disabilities.”Weaver and his colleagues have produced another winner for clergy: a casebook that covers most of the difficult situations in which pastors are called upon to be a first, and, sometimes primary, support and helper. Each case presentation is followed by critical issues to be aware of, relevant information, including community and national resources. Most pastors will be grateful for this book a number of times each year. Sections in the first chapter on the child’s personality development and on effective parenting will be appreciated by most parents.” —David K. Switzer, Emeritus Professor of Pastoral Care, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University |

Creating and Digitizing Language Corpora: Synchronic Databases $100 A range of electronic corpora has become increasingly accessible via the WWW and CD-ROM. This development coincided with improvements in the standards governing the collecting, encoding and archiving of such data. Less attention, however, has been paid to making other types of digital data available. This is especially true of that which one might describe as ‘unconventional’, namely, dialects, child language and bilingual databases. This book is a first step toward developing similar standards for enriching and preserving these neglected resources. |

Curriculum or Craftsmanship: Elementary School Teachers in a Bureaucratic System $4.34 Sociologist Harry L. Gracey spent two years studying an East-Coast school system, which he calls “Brookview,” and determined that the bureaucratic social structure of schools can have a profound and irreversibly negative effect on the creativity of teachers. This volume tells the story of the “Wilbur Wright” elementary school in Brookview. It examines the relationship between the educational institution as a bureaucracy and the goals of the two main types of teaching orientation found in elementary schools such as Wright. The majority of teachers are “production” oriented. They believe that their job is to see that the children in their charge complete as much of the standardized grade level curriculum as possible during the school year. They do achieve some success in preparing children for life in a society where bureaucracy is the dominant form of social organization. The other significant type of teaching orientation is that of the “craftsmen.” These instructors see their goal as the development of each individual’s learning potential, with the curriculum built upon the specific needs and interests of each child. Bureaucratic school structures do nothing to promote this kind of teaching. Any ideas that are at variance with the school’s organizational structure will fail. The craftsman teachers do not have the time to communicate the standardized programs desired by the school board and also to make use of their own individualistic techniques. Further, the continued use of the former cancels the effects of the craftsman approach. In delineating his conclusions, Professor Gracey includes his observations on the community and educational setting ofthe study, the two types of teachers, the administration, the parents, and the children’s response to educational organization. This study is unique in approaching its educational subject matter from a sociological point of view; Professor Gracey intended it as a study of |

Diva: Defiance and Passion in Early Italian Cinema $59.9 As scientific discoveries and technological advances radically modernized Europe around the turn of the twentieth century, artists of all types began questioning what it means to be human in an increasingly mechanistic world. Animated by a luminous goddess at its center, the diva film provided a forum for denouncing social evils and exploring new models of behavior among the sexes. These melodramas of courtship, seduction, marriage, betrayal, abandonment, child custody, and public reputation, to mention only a few themes, offered women a vision of—if not always a realistic hope for—emancipation and self-discovery.In Diva, Angela Dalle Vacche offers the first authoritative study of this important “film” genre of the cinema that preceded the Great War of 1914-1918. She analyzes some seventy films, as well as the work of actresses such as Francesca Bertini, Lyda Borelli, and Pina Menichelli, to establish what the diva film contributed to the modernist development of the “new woman.” Contrasting the Italian diva with the Hollywood vamp Theda Bara and the famous Danish star Asta Nielsen, Dalle Vacche shows how the diva oscillates between articulating Henri Bergson’s vibrant life-force (élan vital) and representing the suffering figure of the Catholic mater dolorosa.Taking readers on a fascinating tour that includes the Ballets Russes, orientalism, art nouveau, Futurism, fashion, prostitution, stunt women in the circus, aviation, anti-Semitism, colonialism, and censorship, Diva sheds important new light on the eccentric implantation of modernity in Italy, as well as on how, before World War I, the filmic image was associated with the powers of the occult and not with the Freudian unconscious, as has been argued until now. |

Early Literacy Fundamentals: A Balanced Approach to Language, Listening, and Literacy Skills $3.86 Early Literacy Fundamentals offers powerful activities to develop the skills, concepts, and knowledge underpinning early literacy. It builds on the personal, social, emotional, creative, and physical development skills that are a traditional part of early childhood programs. Based on the latest research, the book recognizes that oral language is the bedrock upon which formal learning is based and that literacy:begins at birth and is part of an ongoing developmental process;develops concurrently with oral language development;is enhanced by adult models who expose children to print and how it works;is based on a systematic relationship between letters and sounds;is rooted in and connected to the child’s culture and communication patterns. Each of the activities, organized around a seven-strand framework that reflects successful early childhood practices, is presented along with background research and practical advice on helping children initiate their own constructive play. The types of activities teachers will find include:learning activities appropriate to a young child’s age and stage of development;quality pre-school activities that boost all children’s language and literacy skills, and build a strong foundation for reading and literacy success in school;opportunities for children to use oral language in a variety of ways as they play and experiment with words;adult-initiated whole-group activities that can be extended into child-initiated play. Early Literacy Fundamentals provides a comprehensive overview of the language and literacyexperiences children need, and helps teachers give them a strong base on which future reading and learning success can grow. |

Early socioemotional development in the context of family boundary ambiguity. $49.99 Early socioemotional development, in general, and self-regulation, in particular, develops in the context of early parenting relationships. This suggests there are important implications for young children's development when the boundaries circumscribing the parent-child relationship become ambiguous through parental psychological or physical absence. Boundary ambiguity, a theory which describes the basis for individual dysfunction in the context of diffuse family boundaries and is based on general systems theory, may be especially applicable to the study of early toddler emotion regulation. The two primary types of boundary ambiguity are defined as (a) parental psychological absence with physical presence or (b) parental psychological presence with physical absence. However, boundary ambiguity has not been applied, to date, in studies focusing on the relationships between very young children and their parents. The purposes of this study were to: (1) define the construct of psychological absence with physical presence in the early parent-child relationships, (2) explore the impact of psychological absence on the development of children's early self-regulation between 14 and 36 months of age, and (3) explore the impact of psychological presence with physical absence on toddlers' (14-36 months of age) regulatory outcomes. Results supported a proximal method for measuring psychological absence using a latent construct and further demonstrated that mothers' psychological absence significantly predicted children's emotion regulation related behaviors across toddlerhood; these results were consistent across racial/ethnic groups and did not differ for boys as compared to girls. Additionally, results demonstrated that fathers' consistent physical presence significantly predicted toddlers' emotion regulation related behaviors across toddlerhood; these results are discussed within the framework of boundary ambiguity, suggesting that |

Genital Autonomy:: Protecting Personal Choice $189 Circumcision affects 15.3 million children and young adults annually. In terms of gender, 13.3 million boys and 2 million girls are subjected to the involuntary removal of part or all of their external sexual organs every year. The problem of female circumcision has been addressed on an international level, but male circumcision remains a controversial subject that many academics have been reluctant to examine.Circumcision is tolerated today because it has been practiced for millennia by a small but vocal minority of religious and ethnic groups, however, when the practice is examined through the lens of modern legal, ethical, and human rights advancements, no place remains in civilized society for this body-altering ritual. In Genital Autonomy: Protecting Personal Choice, international experts address various types of genital modifications, the impact of these harmful traditional practices on the child, on human rights, and on the development of the concept of bodily integrity. The papers presented in this volume address these topics from a variety of angles. They question and dissects the true motivations of the doctors, witch doctors, and “holy men” who promote and profit from circumcision. |

Hindi-speaking two-year-old children’s development of verb constructions: An examination of experimental and everyday contexts. $49.99 The present study examined 2 year-old Hindi-speaking children’s productivity with transitive and intransitive constructions using concurrent measures of experimental and naturalistic verb use. Productivity is a child’s ability to use a new verb in a construction in which she has never before heard it. In the experimental study seventeen 2.5, and sixteen, 3 year-old children were taught 6 familiar and 4 novel verbs for two types of transitive events. One in which the agent directly brought about a change in the object and one in which the agent used an instrument to bring about the change. Each child learnt half the familiar and novel verbs in the transitive construction (e.g., ladka paani ko gam-aa raha hae- ‘the boy is gain the water’) and half the verbs in the intransitive construction (paani gam gaya – the water is gam-ed’). Results show that most 2.5 year old Hindi-speaking children are productive in the use of constructions with novel verbs in both types of events. All children performed better with familiar verbs and 2.5 year-olds were better at producing an unmodeled transitive construction than an intransitive construction. Studies two and three examined the relation of children’s novel verb use with their own and their caregivers’ verb use in play contexts. Three children who were productive and three who were not productive in the experimental task and their caregivers were recorded in naturalistic play contexts for an hour each week for four weeks. Findings show a strong link between children’s productivity with novel verbs and their own and their caregivers’ use of transitive and intransitive constructions diversely with a number of verbs and argument frames in naturalistic contexts. These results suggest that languages with explicit markings for agent-patient relations facilitate an earlier onset of productivity than word-order languages like English. Additionally, the number of verb types used in familiar constructions helps children understand the |

Italian Panel Painting of the Duecento and Trecento $46.85 This wide-ranging book brings together a rich array of current approaches to panel painting of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, a period that has received far less attention than the Renaissance. From the middle of the thirteenth century onward, Italy witnessed a boom in panel painting. This brought about the transformation of existing object types, including painted crosses, altar frontals, and monumental panels of the Virgin and Child. It also fueled the development of new types of panel painting, particularly various forms of altarpieces, lunette-shaped panels for architectural settings, small-scale panels for personal devotion, and painted chests for private homes. The international gathering of curators, art historians, and conservators who contribute to this volume discuss specific types of panel paintings, and they also examine local traditions, individual artistic solutions, patronage, production, use, iconography, and the relationship of panel painting to other art forms. Among the broader issues they address are liturgy, aesthetics, the perception and function of religious imagery, and style.Author Biography: Victor M. Schmidt teaches at the University of Groningen. |

Kinds, Things, and Stuff: Mass Terms and Generics $12.5 A generic statement is a type of generalization that is made by asserting that a “kind” has a certain property. For example we might hear that marshmallows are sweet. Here, we are talking about the “kind” marshmallow and assert that individual instances of this kind have the property of being sweet. Almost all of our common sense knowledge about the everyday world is put in terms of generic statements. What can make these generic sentences be true even when there are exceptions? A mass term is one that does not “divide its reference;” the word water is a mass term; the word dog is a count term. In a certain vicinity, one can count and identity how many dogs there are, but it doesn’t make sense to do that for water–there just is water present. The philosophical literature is rife with examples concerning how a thing can be composed of a mass, such as a statue being composed of clay. Both generic statements and mass terms have led philosophers, linguists, semanticists, and logicians to search for theories to accommodate these phenomena and relationships. The contributors to this interdisciplinary volume study the nature and use of generics and mass terms. Noted researchers in the psychology of language use material from the investigation of human performance and child-language learning to broaden the range of options open for formal semanticists in the construction of their theories, and to give credence to some of their earlier postulations–for instance, concerning different types of predications that are available for true generics and for the role of object recognitions in the development of count vs. mass terms. Relevant data also is described by investigating the ways children learn these sorts of linguistic items: children can learn how to sue generic statements correctly at an early age, and children are adept at individuating objects and distinguishing them from the stuff of which they are made also at an early age. |

Love’s Pivotal Relationships: The Chum First Love Outlaw and the Intimate Partner $15.35 Tucked within this volume are heartlines, woven equally of two types of tough yet tender threads: tales and thoughts about loving and longing. The weave creates soul stories about pivotal relationships: one’s chum, first love, outlaw, and the intimate partner. The blend of stories and ideas communicates what happens “on the ground” and in the time of daily life. What belongs together is bound together: experience-reflection, meaning-action, smiles and tears. These relationships concern us all. Within them, we experience life’s most important, validating, and memorable “moments.” The chum is one’s first best friend. She or he calls me to become– not just a child, a family member, or a follower of the gang– but a unique person. We tame one another. Thus our friendship promotes us to become real, and affords us an abiding presence. Now I will never be alone, but always vulnerable to loneliness. Significantly, the chum bond is unencumbered with the issues of sexuality. My first love draws out the burgeoning man or woman in me. Within the orbit of our “harmonious us,” we share a plethora of “firsts” and negotiate the full spectrum of absolutes: the One, the Good, the True, the Beautiful, the Magic, and the Tragic. The person of the person and not sex matters most. It is the outlaw who stirs my passion and rouses the broad and raw dimensions of my sexuality. He is the significant stranger who comes from a world different from my normal, habitual context. She introduces new ways of seeing and comprehending the social world.” My outlaw challenges my meaning-system of values, morals and customary practices. With vows or promises, I commit to my intimate partner. He is myconstant companion; she is the one I want to grow old with. These relationships index our growth beyond pure biological unfolding; they reveal that my most significant development happens because the “Other,” by facing and appealing to me for my response, solicits and provokes growth. |

In the popular mind, the perfect man has for many ages stood away back in the beginning of creation; and all the deteriorations of human nature, all the savagery, all the barbarism, have come as degradations of this perfect man. We now know, however, that the precise reverse of this popular idea is true. The perfect man is as yet only an ideal. He is before us, leading on the race to that toward which, through toil and struggle and tears, humanity is striving. Then, as the perfect man has been thought to stand at the beginning of the race, so also has the perfect marriage; for beside this perfect man in his ideal home, created by the hand of God, has stood the perfect woman. And they, hand in hand, represent the perfect social union of the world; and whatever other types of marriage may have prevailed, 01 whatever looser associations that are not worthy of the name of marriage may have existed in the course of human development, these have all been regarded as degradations of this primitive type. This idea also we now know to be simply the reverse of the fact. The perfect marriage, as well as the perfect man, is an ideal which is still ahead of us, something that lures us on in that future toward which, through manifold struggles and strivings and tears, humanity is making its slow and gradual approach. This is exactly what we should expect, if the law of evolution beaccepted as true; for this law starts with the assumption everywhere, which assumption so far as human investigation has gone is always justified by the fact, that all progress is from the general, the unorganized, the indefinite toward the special, the organized, and the definite. Mental Health Issues in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Communities $64 Over the last three decades, the visibility—and public acceptance—of self-identified lesbian women and gay men and bisexual and transgender individuals has increased dramatically, making it more important than ever to understand the dynamics of their relationships. This timely work, part of Volume 21 in the Review of Psychiatry series, offers compelling facts and insights in a concise yet comprehensive format, bringing together the latest research and clinical practice in this rapidly evolving field. • Chapter 1 details normal adolescent development and the extra challenges imposed by the development of a sexual identity that is different from that of most of their peers, including the lack of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender role models.• Chapter 2 presents a rare discussion about theoretical models (managing a concealable stigma, minority stress and resilience, and coping with multiple minority statuses) and empirical data on aging as a stigmatized sexual minority, including the similarities and differences of aging between the sexual minority communities and the heterosexual community and special issues in working with aging ethnic minority gay men, lesbians, and bisexual persons.• Chapter 3 breaks new ground by detailing the expanding role of the psychiatrist or other mental health professional as forensic expert and therapist—requiring not only an in-depth understanding of lesbian and gay mental health issues, but also the often-daunting task of encouraging and teaching judges and juries to better understand these issues as they relate to discriminatory laws in child custody/visitation, workplace harassment/other discrimination, domestic violence, and immigration/asylum.• Chapter 4 covers both the three types of etiological theories on homosexuality presented in the scientific literature and an historical overview of clinical attitudes toward |

Parenting and Child Development in $54.95 The goal of this volume is to discuss—in depth—the ways in which various deviations from traditional family styles affect childrearing practices and child development. Each of the contributors illustrates the dynamic developmental processes that characterize parenting and child development in contexts that can be deemed nontraditional because they do not reflect the demographic characteristics of the traditional families on which social scientists have largely focused. The contributors deal with the dynamics and possible effects of dual-career families, families with unusually involved fathers, families characterized by the occurrence of divorce, single parenthood, remarriage, poverty, adoption, reliance on nonparental childcare, ethnic membership, parents with lesbian or gay sexual orientations, as well as violent and/or neglectful parents. By doing so, the authors provide thoughtful, literate, and up-to-date accounts of a diverse array of nontraditional or traditionally understudied family types. All the chapters offer answers to a common question: How do these patterns of childcare affect children, their experiences, and their developmental processes? The answers to these questions are of practical importance, relevant to a growing proportion of the families and children in the United States, but also have significant implications for the understanding of developmental processes in general. As a result, the book will be of value to basic social scientists, as well as those professionals concerned with guiding and advising clients and public policy. |

Professional development needs and experiences of secondary principals in southwestern Pennsylvania. $108 This study examined the professional development needs and experiences of secondary principals in southwestern Pennsylvania. Professional development for principals has become critical as school leaders have been challenged by the need to create a school culture that helps prepare students for a global society and concurrently meets the requirements of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) (2001). School leaders need to experience relevant, sustained, job-embedded, instructionally focused professional development in order to successfully lead their schools and students into the 21st century. The purpose of this study was to determine the professional development needs of secondary principals, what their preferred delivery method was for this professional development, what types of professional development initiatives they have participated in throughout the region, and if these all align and support one another. A questionnaire based on the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards, the Balanced Leadership Study responsibilities (Waters, et al., 2003), and the Pennsylvania administrative standards was designed and used to investigate the secondary principals’ perspectives in relation to these needs and preferences for learning.;Based on the findings of this study, the top five professional development needs of secondary principals in the southwestern Pennsylvania region include analyzing data, communicating effectively, using research and “best practices”, building team commitment, developing information and data collection strategies. Coaching was the overall preferred delivery method for professional development for the secondary principals surveyed, followed by the method of mentoring. Many of the initiatives across the region were viewed as providing effective professional development in areas of need identified in the survey. Additionally, many principals recognized the importance of having professional development experiences that allow for |
