Learning, Teaching, and Community $40.95 This volume brings together established and new scholarly voices to explore how participatory and situated approaches to learning can contribute to educational innovation. The contributors’ critical examinations of educational programming and engagements provide insights into how educators, youth, families, and community members understand and enact their commitments to diversity and equitable access. Collectively, these essays complicate notions of community, alerting readers to ways in which community can be constructed other than in geographical and ethnoracial terms–as alliances and collaborations of individuals joining together to accomplish or negotiate shared agendas. The focus on agency combined with social context, a dialectic to which all of the authors speak, enlarges and invigorates our sense of what is pedagogically possible in societies characterized by diversity and flux. *Part I, “Linking Pedagogy to Communities,” focuses on dynamic initiatives where practitioners collaborate with community members and other professionals as they acknowledge and build on the cultural, linguistic, and intellectual resources of ethnic-minority students and their communities. *Part II, “Professional Learning for Diversity,” centers on the authors’ experiences in facilitating opportunities for working with prospective and practicing teachers to develop situated pedagogies, highlighting both the challenges that emerge and the transformations that occur. *Part III, “Learning in Community (and Community in Learning), illustrates how educational innovation can extend beyond the realm of schools and classrooms by elucidating ways in which individuals construct learning venues inout-of-school settings. Learning, Teaching, and Community: Contributions of Situated and Participatory Approaches to Educational Innovation is a compelling and timely text ideally suited for courses focused on teacher education and development, informal learning, equity and |

Where Do I Go from Here?: Meeting the Unique Educational Needs of Migrant Students $6.01 “Where Do I Go From Here?” by Karen Vocke is a practical and well written book that will appeal to teachers, administrators, and other community members where migrant workers live and these workers’ children go to school. The book contains valuable resources, including lesson plans and other materials that could be used by teachers of other ESL children, as well as by teachers whose students are not learners of English. The book helps the reader become aware that educational opportunity and equality do not exist as static entities, but rather are created by whole communities, especially those who choose to make the invisible more visible. – Prolepsis In our current society, teachers are faced with students who move frequently from place to place, speak a language other than English, and represent diverse cultures. This book shares many strategies and ideas that will help a teacher, experienced or novice, to meet the needs of these “new” students found in U.S. classrooms. – Cheryl BoothbyState and Federal Programs Directorand Special Education DirectorHartford, Michigan, Public SchoolsMigrant farm laborers are often called America’s “invisible people” – a term that, tragically, is just as applicable to their children. Because their lives are transitory and their English skills often limited, our opportunities to have a lasting impact on their literacy education are far too brief. But that makes these children no less deserving of our full commitment. In “Where Do I Go from Here?” Karen Vocke describes how to make the most of each day, creating an educational experience that will serve all children long after they leave our classrooms.Always mindful of state standards and assessment requirements, Vocke demonstrates how to modify the |

”There’s some good karma up in here”: A case study of white school leadership in an urban context. $49.99 As educators work to improve achievement within the current policy environment of accountability and “subgroups,” their attention has been drawn to considerations of race, culture, and learning in schools. Yet few school leaders have the preparation or knowledge to assist teacher learning about these issues.;Theories of culturally relevant pedagogy focus on how teachers can teach subject matter in a culturally appropriate manner, and previous scholarship has considered culturally relevant pedagogy in relation to teaching and learning. This inquiry examines it in relation to leadership content knowledge. Critical race theory offers a lens through which to examine the relationship of beliefs and knowledge when considering race and racism in the American educational system and for further situating an examination of school leadership and cultural competency.;The research questions I address are: (1) What kind of perspective toward students is held by educators in the school? How do these perspectives connect with teaching, learning, and leadership? (2) How is culturally relevant pedagogy represented in the schools? How do school leaders foster or hinder CRP in their schools? (3) In which contexts and events in the practice of school leadership do issues of race, culture, and learning surface? How are the issues mediated by the principal and other school leaders?;This case study of three White principals reveals that they faced many issues of race, culture, and learning, yet tended to be colorblind and colormute. Even when they identified issues, they were reluctant to address them or without resources, thus ignoring situations that could have served as sites of teacher learning. Several White teachers held dynamic and nuanced asset perspectives toward children of color. A Guide to College Writing Assessment $22 While most English professionals feel comfortable with language and literacy theories, assessment theories seem more alien. English professionals often don’t have a clear understanding of the key concepts in educational measurement, such as validity and reliability, nor do they understand the statistical formulas associated with psychometrics. But understanding assessment theory—and applying it—by those who are not psychometricians is critical in developing useful, ethical assessments in college writing programs, and in interpreting and using assessment results.A Guide to College Writing Assessment is designed as an introduction and source book for WPAs, department chairs, teachers, and administrators. Always cognizant of the critical components of particular teaching contexts, O’Neill, Moore, and Huot have written sophisticated but accessible chapters on the history, theory, application and background of writing assessment, and they offer a dozen appendices of practical samples and models for a range of common assessment needs.Because there are numerous resources available to assist faculty in assessing the writing of individual students in particular classrooms, A Guide to College Writing Assessment focuses on approaches to the kinds of assessment that typically happen outside of individual classrooms: placement evaluation, exit examination, programmatic assessment, and faculty evaluation. Most of all, the argument of this book is that creating the conditions for meaningful college writing assessment hinges not only on understanding the history and theories informing assessment practice, but also on composition programs availing themselves of the full range of available assessment practices. |

A case study of one of North Carolina’s correctional youth facility’s implementation of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). $69 Federal law mandates that inmates in the correctional system under the age of 22 be provided a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) and that the correctional system be held accountable for ensuring that parent (s) of inmates under the age of 18 and inmates receive their due process rights (Leone, Rutherford, & Nelson, 1991). Given the differing attitudes of policy makers, citizens, prison workers, and prison administration toward education of incarcerated adults, the researcher believes this study is justified in that it adds to the discourse concerning special education of inmates under the age of 22, and it shows the successful efforts of the exceptional students program in the correctional system. This is a case study of one of North Carolina’s correctional facility’s implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Additionally, the case study demonstrates how the Bronfenbrenner’s Ecology of Human Development System, mesosystem, exosystem, and the macrosystem influence the implementation of the IDEA and the provision of a FAPE to inmates with disabilities. The research questions that guided the study are as follows: (a) Do correctional educational personnel have adequate resources to implement the provisions of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)?; and (b) How do teachers [correctional educators] ensure that inmates with disabilities are provided a free appropriate public education? This study is limited to four educational administrators and six teachers who work in one of North Carolina’s correctional facility’s secondary school program. The correctional system is situated in the western part of the state in the foothills of North Carolina’s mountains. The study’s findings of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of incarcerated youth in one North Carolina’s correctional facility are based on this particular facility; its findings should not be generalized to this or any other correctional |

A study of processes and perceptions of educational decision makers: Looking at organizational trust in critical decisions. $49.99 Literature from the 1990s has professed that not only is trust a key ingredient for a business's viability and sustainability, it is vital to organizations that want to succeed in a global economy. As a consequence of organizational restructuring, downsizing or integrating acquired companies as part of a merger, companies must depend on diverse and remote teams working together, in order to succeed. In this effort, trust is especially critical. One specific type of organization, the United States' Education system is struggling to consistently reach achievement levels and is under continual scrutiny, in light of repeated poor performance against recently mandated standards. After reviewing a several key studies focusing on elementary and middle schools in an urban setting, Hoy and Tschannen-Morran (1999), Bryk and Schneider (2002), Kochanek (2005), the intent of this study is to explore the dynamics of decision making in connection with the concept of trust, specifically, the perceptions of key decision-makers in education. Using a purposeful sample of key decision makers in Human Resources involved in actual decision-making situations, this research examines how existing components of trust are either central or peripheral to the perceptions of decision makers across a spectrum of issues. Where prior studies were conducted in an urban setting and looked at trust from the viewpoint of principals to teachers, teacher to teacher and sometimes parents to teachers and principals, this inquiry seeks evidence as to the perceptions of those in suburban district offices. This group is very involved in decisions that affect all levels of the educational organization and this paper seeks to understand their perspective and give them a voice. |

A training program for special education teachers: Systemic classroom interventions designed to reduce sensory symptoms in children in special education classrooms. $49.99 Sensory deficits coexist with other behavioral, emotional, and physical conditions in young children who meet criteria for special education services in the public schools. Literature suggests that sensory deficits may contribute to some of the problematic behaviors children display; however, there are few resources available to assist teachers in providing an environmentally appropriate educational setting for these children. This dissertation reviews the literature relating to sensory deficits and existing interventions. It also develops and structures an appropriate training program for special education teachers. Teacher training consists of 4 separate modules occurring on 4 separate occasions. The first module orients teachers to sensory issues in young children, and the second module focuses on environmental interventions and the use of materials readily available in their classrooms. Finally, the third and fourth modules concentrate on approaches to working with challenging children. It is hypothesized that an appropriate school structure will assist in decreasing behavioral symptoms due to sensory deficits. In addition, a fifth module targeting school administrators focuses on the assessment of sensory deficits, the importance of identifying these deficits, and approaches to working with these deficits outside of the classroom. |

Advances in Research on Networked Learning $159 Networked learning is learning in which information and communications technology (ICT) is used to promote connections: between one learner and other learners; between learners and tutors; between a learning community and its learning resources. Networked learning is an area which has great practical and theoretical importance. It is a rapidly growing area of educational practice, particularly in higher education and the corporate sector. This volume brings together some of the best research in the field, and uses it to signpost some directions for future work. The papers in this collection represent a major contribution to our collective sense of recent progress in research on networked learning. In addition, they serve to highlight some of the largest or most important gaps in our understanding of students’ perspectives on networked learning, patterns of interaction and online discourse, and the role of contextual factors. The range of topics and methods addressed in these papers attests to the vitality of this important field of work. More significant yet is the complex understanding of the field that they combine to create. In combination, they help explain some of the key relationships between teachers’ and learners’ intentions and experiences, the affordances of text-based communications technologies and processes of informed and intelligent educational change. This volume will prove very valuable to researchers and teachers working in (higher) education and corporate education. |

Affirming Students’ Right to Their Own Language: Bridging Language Policies and Pedagogical Practices $41.53 A Co-publication of the National Council of Teachers of English and Routledge. How can teachers make sound pedagogical decisions and advocate for educational policies that best serve the needs of students in today’s diverse classrooms? What is the pedagogical value of providing culturally and linguistically diverse students greater access to their own language and cultural orientations? This landmark volume responds to the call to attend to the unfinished pedagogical business of the NCTE Conference on College Composition and Communication 1974 Students’ Right to Their Own Language resolution. Chronicling the interplay between legislated/litigated education policies and language and literacy teaching in diverse classrooms, it presents exemplary research-based practices that maximize students’ learning by utilizing their home-based cultural, language, and literacy practices to help them meet school expectations. Pre-service teachers, practicing teachers, and teacher educators need both resources and knowledge, including global perspectives, about language variation in PreK-12 classrooms and hands-on strategies that enable teachers to promote students’ use of their own language in the classroom while also addressing mandated content and performance standards. This book meets that need. Visit http://www.ncte.org for more information about NCTE books, membership, and other services. |

California school teachers: Retirement and financial satisfaction. $49.99 Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine the common characteristics among early retirees who retired prior to meeting the eligibility requirements of maximum pension plans and who consulted with a financial planning firm, and maintained adequacy of resources during the retirement years. Methodology. Descriptive research methodology was used to identify the common characteristics among early retirees who retired prior to meeting the eligibility requirements of maximum pension plans, who consulted with a financial planning firm and maintained adequacy of resources during the retirement years. The descriptive method was selected and the researcher was able to discover characteristics that allowed California teachers to retire early and maintained adequacy of resources. Findings. Examination of quantitative and qualitative data from forty retired California teachers identified the characteristics which contributed to their decision to retire prior to meeting the eligibility to maximum pension plans. Early retirement planning was the most significant factor influencing the decision to retire early. Retirement projections and portfolio review were the most valuable sources of information in the decision to retire early. The data revealed no significant difference between males and females in the factors that allowed them to retire prior to meeting the eligibility to maximum benefits. Conclusions. Teachers must begin to plan early for their retirement. Teachers cannot rely on the State Teachers Retirement System and Social Security alone. Working with a financial planner is essential. The use of educational agencies is a determining factor in the ability to retire early. Early retirement is not possible without a plan. Gender is not an indicator for the type or amount of planning necessary to retire early. Recommendations. Further research is advised: The study could be replicated to include a larger population. Choosing a Standards-Based Mathematics Curriculum $33.75 If your district is preparing to review mathematics curricula for adoption, opportunity awaits you. The past decade has seen tremendous activity in mathematics education, resulting in the creation of several new curricula to promote deeper and richer mathematical learning. Choosing a Standards-Based Mathematics Curriculum takes you through the process, addressing the many issues involved in curriculum selection and implementation, and helping you work through both of these phases.A publication of the K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Center at EDC, this authoritative guide focuses on the thirteen programs supported by the Center, though the ideas discussed are not specific to these programs. Its aim is to present a comprehensive view of how individual districts should go about adopting new mathematics curricula. The authors address a range of issues districts may confront, decisions committees will have to make, and strategies they may use, and describe many different procedures and processes that others have found useful. For the selection phase, the book explores how to assemble a selection committee, assess resources and needs, and create guidelines and criteria for evaluating different programs. The curriculum implementation section focuses on ways to work toward successful use of materials by planning a realistic and effective roll-out strategy, supporting teachers, and building community buy-in and assistance. Along the way, lots of different resources are provided, including stories and examples from practitioners, suggestions for further support, and sample selection criteria from school districts and other educational organizations.Anyone responsible for the curriculumreview and selection process within a district will find Choosing a Standards-Based Mathematics Curriculum essential reading, especially assistant superintendents, curriculum coordinators, mathematics supervisors, lead teachers, and department heads. |

College: Rethinking Literacies Across the Curriculum $122.4 What’s the problem with literacy at college? How might everyday literacy be harnessed for educational ends?Based on the first major study of literacy practices in colleges in the UK, this book explores the reading and writing associated with learning subjects across the college curriculum. It investigates literacy practices in which students engage outside of college, and teaching and learning strategies through which these can help support the curriculum. With insightful analyses of innovative practices, it considers ways of changing teaching practices to enable students to draw upon their full potential.Recent research work has challenged the myth of individual student deficit, arguing cogently that people have ‘funds of knowledge’ from diverse and vibrant cultural roots, and that these have been misguidedly disqualified by the education system. It has claimed that different ‘ways with words’ can provide valuable resources for learning. However, the empirical exploration of this claim has lagged far behind the theoretical debate. Improving Learning in College resolves this by showing the integrity and richness of the literacy practices of a significant population, not previously the focus of such research: those who take vocational and academic college courses in colleges. It addresses an issue which has not until now been developed within this research tradition: that of how these practices can not only be valued and validated, but mobilised and harnessed to enhance learning in educational settings. This book will interest all teachers, teacher-educators and researchers concerned with post-compulsory education and vocational education in compulsory schooling. |

Concept Mapping in Mathematics: Research into Practice $72.6 Concept Mapping in Mathematics: Research into Practice is the first comprehensive book on concept mapping in mathematics. It provides the reader with an understanding of how the meta-cognitive tool, namely, hierarchical concept maps, and the process of concept mapping can be used innovatively and strategically to improve planning, teaching, learning, and assessment at different educational levels. This collection of research articles examines the usefulness of concept maps in the educational setting, with applications and examples ranging from primary grade classrooms through secondary mathematics to pre-service teacher education, undergraduate mathematics and post-graduate mathematics education. A second meta-cognitive tool, called vee diagrams, is also critically examined by two authors, particularly its value in improving mathematical problem solving.Thematically, the book flows from a historical development overview of concept mapping in the sciences to applications of concept mapping in mathematics by teachers and pre-service teachers as a means of analyzing mathematics topics, planning for instruction and designing assessment tasks including applications by school and university students as learning and review tools. This book provides case studies and resources that have been field tested with school and university students alike. The findings presented have implications for enriching mathematics learning and making problem solving more accessible and meaningful for students. The theoretical underpinnings of concept mapping and of the studies in the book include Ausubel’s cognitive theory of meaningful learning, constructivist and Vygotskian psychology to name a few. There is evidence particularly from international studies such as PISA and TIMSS and mathematics education research, which suggest that students’ mathematical literacy and problem solving skills can be enhanced through students collaborating and interacting as they work, |

Crossing the Tracks $3.87 One of the most crucial controversies in educational circles today involves the practice of tracking , or grouping students by ability from the early grades onward. Because the tests that are used to measure ability turn out to be a better measure of privilege or deprivation than of innate intelligence, underprivileged children are consistently relegated to the slow track . Forced into a self-fulfilling and racist prophecy, they must contend with inferior instruction, inequitable resources, and lowered expectations – which all but guarantee their future failure. Crossing the Tracks is a groundbreaking survey of schools throughout the country that have successfully crossed the tracks by reintegrating their classrooms. With all the excitement attendant on any effort at monumental reform, schools from Hawaii to Maine, Minnesota to Louisiana, are changing not only the makeup of their classes but their fundamental approach to education. Wheelock documents the actual experiences of schools as they reduce or eliminate ability grouping and strive to offer superior learning environments to all students. With chapters on parental involvement, teacher training, curriculum reform, student aspirations, and examples of programs and practices that have been implemented across the nation, Crossing the Tracks is the first book to outline a specific course of action for parents, teachers, administrators, and others ready to join the untracking movement. With its clear writing and many practical features, including a list of successfully-untracked schools and key contact people at each school, Wheelock’s text is strongly endorsed by both educators and policy makers. Crossing the Tracks should havea significant impact on our thinking about approaches to elementary and middle-school education and should play a major role in the movement to enrich the learning process for all of our students. |

Defending and Parenting Children Who Learn Differently: Lessons from Edison’s Mother (Praeger Series on Contemporary Health and Living) $45 Teel incorporates the fascinating story of Nancy Edison’s love for her son Thomas, who had been labeled unteachable, then presents us with the wider array of and issues for children who learn differently. We all know Thomas Edison was a genius of seemingly limitless imagination. Yet few know he was a failure in elementary school. Teel shows us how Edison’s mother, Nancy, guided the boy deemed a dunce by officials—even assumed mentally retarded by his father—to become one of the greatest inventors of all time. Edison’s progressive and imaginative teaching methods hold lessons even today for all children who learn differently from conventional methods, as well as for the parents and teachers who care about them. Teel also explains how parents can negotiate the educational maze created by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). An Individualized Education Program is explained in detail, and options such as enlisting the assistance of a professional advocate are also discussed. The latest research about current medication therapies and the origins plus potential benefits of ADHD are reviewed. A leading professional advocate explains what every parent needs to know about the public school system. Other topics addressed include the effectiveness of home schooling and parental and student rights. An extensive list of local and national resources is also offered. |

Dialogic Approaches to TESOL Where the Ginkgo Tree Grows $39.95 This book locates dialogic pedagogy within the history of TESOL approaches and methods in which the communicative approach has been the dominant paradigm. Dialogic inquiry in the form of story telling, oral histories, and knowledge from the ground up and from the margins has much to offer the field. In dialogic approaches, the teacher and students learn in community and the students’ home languages and cultures, their families and communities, are seen as resources.Dialogic Approaches to TESOL: Where the Ginkgo Tree Grows explores teacher research, feminist contributions to voice, social identity and dialogic pedagogy, and the role of teachers, students, families, and communities as advocates and change agents. After a brief history of TESOL methods and an introduction to dialogic pedagogy, four features of dialogic approaches to TESOL are identified and discussed: learning in community, problem-posing, learning by doing, and who does knowledge serve? The main text in each chapter considers a single topic related to the concept of dialogic pedagogy. Branching text leads to related discussions without losing the main point of the chapter. This structure allows readers to become well-rooted in each component of dialogic pedagogy and to “branch out” into deeper philosophic understandings as well as actual practices across a range of contexts.Dialogic Approaches to TESOL offers a place for dialogue and reflection on the prospects for transforming educational institutions to serve those who have historically been excluded and marginalized. It provides questions, frameworks, and resources for those who are just beginning in the field and for U.S.-based educators who want to bring critical multicultural and multilingual perspectives into language arts, reading and literacy education. |

Education Quality and Social Justice in the Global South: Challenges for Policy, Practice and Research $135 Although more children than ever before are now enrolled in school, in the global South a good quality education remains out of reach for all except a privileged few. Most pupils experience inadequately prepared and poorly motivated teachers struggling to deliver new and complex curricula with insufficient learning resources in overcrowded classrooms, often using language that neither learners nor teachers speak outside school. For these learners, a good quality education must be a socially just education that is inclusive, relevant and democratic. It must develop the capabilities of learners to promote economic growth, create sustainable livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic societies and achieve individual wellbeing. This in turn requires developing the professional capabilities of teachers and leaders. This book includes contributions from leading scholars in the field of education and development. It draws on state of the art evidence from the five year EdQual research programme on implementing education quality in low income countries and other relevant research. Through exploring recent initiatives in areas such as the curriculum, the use of ICTs, language and literacy, school effectiveness and leadership, the contributions go beyond looking at inputs and outputs for good quality education to open up the black box of the classroom and explore how practices of teaching and learning impact on different groups of learners. Some of the cross-cutting themes explored include defining quality, gender, inclusion, taking successful initiatives to scale and planning for both quality and equality.Education Quality and Social Justice in the Global South will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers within the fields of international and comparative education, teacher education, educational policy, poverty and development studies, African and Asian studies and related disciplines in the global North and South. |
