Give Your Toddler An Educational Gift This Holiday

It may seem easy for some people to just go and pick any kind of gift for your toddler. The thing with buying gifts for toddlers hastily is that it doesn’t give you much time to think whether what you’re purchasing can be beneficial to your child or not. Instead of just picking what you find in the toyshop, consider one that is educational, one that will help your toddler develop important learning skills.

It’s no surprise, books are the favorite educational gift to give young boys and girls. Buy a book with a lot of colorful images drawn on the pages. Kids who don’t know how to read yet will enjoy looking at the pictures of people, animal, places, and other interesting objects. Giving your child this kind of gift will give the kid an opportunity to recognize important elements including numbers, letters, shapes, and colors.

Aside from looking at colorful pages of a book, kids love to practice their creativity through drawing or painting. A coloring book will allow your toddler to learn arts and crafts at a young age. Get your little one a coloring book of popular animals or cartoon characters that will surely arouse interest. Magic drawing boards are effective tools as well since kids can just easily draw, write, and erase with it.

When it comes to developing a child’s recognition upon shapes, shape insert toys are the usual. While these types of toys are effective in helping your child understand various shapes and sizes, they can easily get boring. Buy your toddler instead a game that will arouse interest while encouraging learning. Cooking toys are good examples of this. Since cooking requires filling and emptying containers with different sizes, it is an efficient way of helping the child learning not only the concept of sizes and shapes but of volume as well.

There are other means of helping toddlers recognize the alphabet and numbers as well aside from books. The high technology allows you to choose from a variety of digital puzzles and some other electronic kid’s toys. There are even kids learning shows today that are available in CD and DVD. Anything that helps your toddler learn letters and numbers is a good investment.

There are certain precautions you need to take when buying kid’s toys. While it is alright to buy toys that are a year or two levels advanced for your child, you should always check for choking hazards. Avoid buying educational toys that are behind your child’s learning ability because it will only come to a waste.

”If you give Allison a book…”: A toddler’s aesthetic responses to literature experiences.

$49.99

This case study narrates the depth and breadth of aesthetic responses to literature demonstrated by Allison between the ages of twenty and thirty months. By exploring and analyzing ways in which Allison was engaged in literacy experiences I provide insight into the types of responses to literature that are possible, especially from very young children. Observational data in the form of anecdotal and analytic journal entries was recorded and used to provide information about the following three research questions: What types of social practices encapsulate Allison’s experiences with literature? In what ways is Allison involved in aesthetic transactions with texts? What kind of literature is appealing to Allison and other toddlers?;Patterns emerged from a retrospective, thematic analysis of the entries. Allison’s aesthetic responses to literature were categorized into the following five types: Socially Constructed Responses, Dramatic Responses, Emotional Responses, Responses that Explore a Child’s World, and Intertextual Responses. The theoretical framework for this study drew largely on prior studies in the field of emergent literacy, reader response theory, and aesthetics. This study’s findings inform an understanding of early literacy development, literature discussion, and response issues in schools.;Conclusions are as follows: Allison’s experiences with text were imbedded within the social practices of her family; background knowledge and prior experiences informed her responses by providing points of reference for her to appreciate and enjoy literary experiences; and enriched, aesthetic responses to literature are possible as rich, life experiences are called upon through interpersonal interactions. Drama, including role-play, engaged Allison in exploring aesthetics and aesthetic practices, was an opportunistic venue for Allison to aesthetically respond to literature beyond the limits of her expressive language skills, and was a powerful medium through which

A Parent's Guide to Effectively Communicating with Your Child: How to Speak So Your Toddler and Preschooler Will Listen and Do What You Say

A Parent’s Guide to Effectively Communicating with Your Child: How to Speak So Your Toddler and Preschooler Will Listen and Do What You Say

$24.95

Communicating with a toddler can make even the most patient parents doubt their parenting abilities. According to the Academy of Pediatrics, children begin to assert their independence and test the limits between the ages of one and four. For parents, this can be a frustrating time. With independence comes an array of bad behavior, often due to an inability to express their feelings. Temper tantrums, rebellion, and aggressive behavior are among the tactics children use when they cannot voice their needs. You can help children communicate effectively and deter bad behavior by adjusting your communication tactics to their level of understanding. If you are having trouble communicating with your child, A Parent’s Guide to Effectively Communicating with Your Child will provide proven communication techniques to help you convey your wishes in a way that he or she will understand. This book addresses the three stages of communication in young children: preverbal communication in children two years of age and under, beginning language in children ages two to three, and advanced communication in children ages three to four. Each of these stages involve a specific set of communication skills and related behavior. After reading this book, you will know how to effectively communicate with children throughout the different stages of development. By doing this, you will have a child who not only listens to you, but also does what you ask him or her to. Nurturing communication techniques are emphasized, including listening to and connecting with your child, understanding his or her unique qualities, encouraging cooperation, and helping your child deal with his or her feelings. You will learn how to help your child express when he or she is angry, scared, excited, or nervous through the use of words instead of bad behavior. You will learn the importance of speaking authoritatively to your child, avoiding inconsistency, staying calm when your child’s

A Parents' Guide to Ensuring a Successful Day Care Experience for an Infant or Toddler

A Parents’ Guide to Ensuring a Successful Day Care Experience for an Infant or Toddler

$4.99

Once parents make the difficult decision to place their infant or toddler in day care, they must face the equally formidable task of deciding which day care center will best serve their baby’s needs. Unfortunately, some mother and fathers fail to realize that no matter where their child spends her day, a large portion of the responsibility for fulfilling her most important requirements will remain with them; and to the extent that they do not factor in their on-going involvement in every aspect of their child’s care, whatever arrangements are made will be inadequate. The first two or three years are a unique and delicate time of life. The foundations of intelligence, language, personality, social competence and other significant facets of human development are forming; and the learning that occurs in these areas takes place on a fundamental level. Unlike older children, infants and toddlers cannot have educational experiences scheduled into specific periods according to superimposed lesson plans. Little by little, they are learning about everything – continuously. Therefore, the elements of consistency and persistency are essential.Furthermore, the elements of intensity and intimacy play a more critical role than they will later on. During these early years, educational experiences are greatly enhanced by the presence of external enthusiasm, and heavily dependent upon respect for individual differences. Consequently, infants and toddlers thrive when they receive prompt, personal attention from people who are concerned and excited about their achievements, and when exposed to custom-made environments well matched to their interests and abilities at each stage of their rapid development. This presents problems, both for mothers and fathers who must be away from their babies between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, or longer, as well as for day care personnel who are obligated to make the welfare of an entire

What sets humans apart from other social animals? In an intimate account of a child’s development from age one to three, distinguished psychologist Marilyn Shatz answers this question by arguing that humans are unique in their ability to reflect on themselves, to compare themselves to others, and to self-correct. Language plays a central role in such processes because it offers the developing child a powerful tool for going beyond immediate experience to an understanding of unobservable states and motivations. In addition to her two decades of research in developmental psychology, Shatz draws on observations of her grandson Ricky to show how toddlers use their cognitive, social, and linguistic skills to understand and eventually to employ language as a means for successfully engaging others. Shatz expertly brings the dialogue of the toddler to life, plotting the turning points in Ricky’s progress from fifteen-month-old one-word speaker to three-year-old articulate preschooler. The story of a child’s increasingly sophisticated involvement with an expanding world is here generalized to other young children and skillfully interwoven with both empirical research and insightful commentary about the nature of human’ learning in a social setting. Parents, teachers, researchers, and students of developmental psychology and psycholinguistics will find this book to be an interesting and engaging study of early developmental processes.

Affects as Process: An Inquiry into the Centrality of Affect in Psychological Life

Affects as Process: An Inquiry into the Centrality of Affect in Psychological Life

$50.8

In this readable meditation on the nature of emotional experience, Joseph Jones takes the reader on a fascinating walking-tour of current research findings bearing on emotional development. Beginning with a nuanced reappraisal of Freud’s philosophical premises, he argues that Freud’s reliance on “primary process” as the means of linking body and mind inadvertantly stripped affects of their process role. Further, the resulting emphasis on fantasy left the problem of conceptualizing the mental life of the prerepresentational infant in a theoretical limbo. Affects as Process offers an elegantly simple way out of this impasse. Drawing in the literatures of child development, ethology, and neuroscience, Jones argues that, in their simplest form, affects are best understood as the presymbolic representatives and governors of motivational systems. So conceptualized, affects, and not primary process, constitute the initial processing system of the prerepresentational infant. It then becomes possible to re-vision early development as the sequential maturation of different motivational systems, each governed by a specific presymbolic affect. More complex emotional states, which emerge when the toddler begins to think symbolically, represent the integration of motivational systems and thought as maturation plunges the child into a world of loves and hates that cannot be escaped simply through behavior. Jones’ reappraisal of emotional development in early childhood and beyond clarifies the strengths and weaknesses of such traditional concepts as infantile sexuality, object relations, internalization, splitting, and the emergence of the dynamic unconscious. The surprising terminus of his excursion, moreover, is the novel perspective on the self as an emergent phenomenon reflecting the integration of affective and symbolic processing systems.

Bridging Cultures in Early Care And Education

$23.95

Bridging Cultures in Early Care and Education: A Training Module is a resource designed to help pre-service and in-service early childhood educators, including infant-toddler caregivers, understand the role of culture in their programs. It is also intended for professionals who work with children and their families in a variety of other roles, such as social workers, special educators, and early interventionists, and for use in college courses focused on early childhood education and child development. The module explains and illustrates how early childhood educators can use the organizing concepts of individualism and collectivism as a means of understanding cultural conflict and difference. These concepts have been shown to be highly useful in improving home-school understanding across cultures. Based on real-life examples of cultural dilemmas in early care and education settings, participants engage the concepts of individualism and collectivism to solve a variety of scenarios in a dynamic and engaging manner. *Chapter 1 introduces the Bridging Cultures for Early Care and Education approach, provides a brief history, and explains the training module. Buy, Buy Baby

$14.95

Our kids are becoming consumers at an alarmingly young age. Many children are already asking for products by brand name at age two. Toy and media corporations have long manipulated the insecurities of parents to move their products, but Buy, Buy Baby unveils the chilling fact that these companies are now using and often funding the latest research in child development to enable them to sell directly to babies and toddlers. Susan Gregory Thomas presents shocking evidence that some of these products actually impair development and could harm our kids socially and cognitively, for life. The good news is that parents can overcome this dangerous economic and cultural shift. Blending prodigious reportage with an empathic voice, Thomas shows how we can help our children live at their natural pace, not the frenetic clip that serves only the toddler-industrial complex. Buy, Buy Baby helps us fight the power that marketers wield by exposing the false fears they spread.

Child Development brings the research to life through stories. What prompted researcher Virginia Apgar to develop what became the Apgar Test on newborns? Who knew that psychologist Eleanor Gibson’ famous “visual cliff” experiment was inspired by her own toddler’s experience of hesitation in approaching the edge of the Grand Canyon? These stories help students appreciate the relevance of theory, helping them internalize research-intensive material. Through integrating such stories, this text provides the scientific rigor of Berk’s child development books from Allyn & Bacon with the accessibility of Worth’s Berger.

Development of Sensory, Motor and Cognitive Capacities in Early Infancy: From Sensation to Cognition

Development of Sensory, Motor and Cognitive Capacities in Early Infancy: From Sensation to Cognition

$87.28

Research on the development of human infants has revealed remarkable capacities in recent years. Instead of stressing the limitations of the newborn, the modern approach is now more optimistically based on an assessment of the adaptive capabilities of the infant. Innate endowment, coupled with interaction with the physical and social environment, enables a developmental transition from processes deeply rooted in early perception and action to the cognitive and language abilities typical of the toddler.; This book reviews a number of issues in early human development. It includes a reconceptualization of the role of perception at the origins of development, a reconciliation of psychophysical and ecological approaches to early face perception, and building bridges between biological and psychological aspects of development in terms of brain structure and function. Topics covered include basic exploratory processes of early visual systems in early perception and action; face perception in newborns, species typical aspects of human communication, imitation, perception of the phonetic structure of speech, origins of the pointing gesture, handedness origins and development, theoretical contributions on perception and cognition, implicit and explicit knowledge in babies; sensory-motor coordination and cognition, information processing and cognition, perception, habituation and the development of intelligence from infancy.

Early socioemotional development in the context of family boundary ambiguity.

Early socioemotional development in the context of family boundary ambiguity.

$49.99

Early socioemotional development, in general, and self-regulation, in particular, develops in the context of early parenting relationships. This suggests there are important implications for young children's development when the boundaries circumscribing the parent-child relationship become ambiguous through parental psychological or physical absence. Boundary ambiguity, a theory which describes the basis for individual dysfunction in the context of diffuse family boundaries and is based on general systems theory, may be especially applicable to the study of early toddler emotion regulation. The two primary types of boundary ambiguity are defined as (a) parental psychological absence with physical presence or (b) parental psychological presence with physical absence. However, boundary ambiguity has not been applied, to date, in studies focusing on the relationships between very young children and their parents. The purposes of this study were to: (1) define the construct of psychological absence with physical presence in the early parent-child relationships, (2) explore the impact of psychological absence on the development of children's early self-regulation between 14 and 36 months of age, and (3) explore the impact of psychological presence with physical absence on toddlers' (14-36 months of age) regulatory outcomes. Results supported a proximal method for measuring psychological absence using a latent construct and further demonstrated that mothers' psychological absence significantly predicted children's emotion regulation related behaviors across toddlerhood; these results were consistent across racial/ethnic groups and did not differ for boys as compared to girls. Additionally, results demonstrated that fathers' consistent physical presence significantly predicted toddlers' emotion regulation related behaviors across toddlerhood; these results are discussed within the framework of boundary ambiguity, suggesting that
