Learning, Teaching, and Community $40.95 This volume brings together established and new scholarly voices to explore how participatory and situated approaches to learning can contribute to educational innovation. The contributors’ critical examinations of educational programming and engagements provide insights into how educators, youth, families, and community members understand and enact their commitments to diversity and equitable access. Collectively, these essays complicate notions of community, alerting readers to ways in which community can be constructed other than in geographical and ethnoracial terms–as alliances and collaborations of individuals joining together to accomplish or negotiate shared agendas. The focus on agency combined with social context, a dialectic to which all of the authors speak, enlarges and invigorates our sense of what is pedagogically possible in societies characterized by diversity and flux. *Part I, “Linking Pedagogy to Communities,” focuses on dynamic initiatives where practitioners collaborate with community members and other professionals as they acknowledge and build on the cultural, linguistic, and intellectual resources of ethnic-minority students and their communities. *Part II, “Professional Learning for Diversity,” centers on the authors’ experiences in facilitating opportunities for working with prospective and practicing teachers to develop situated pedagogies, highlighting both the challenges that emerge and the transformations that occur. *Part III, “Learning in Community (and Community in Learning), illustrates how educational innovation can extend beyond the realm of schools and classrooms by elucidating ways in which individuals construct learning venues inout-of-school settings. Learning, Teaching, and Community: Contributions of Situated and Participatory Approaches to Educational Innovation is a compelling and timely text ideally suited for courses focused on teacher education and development, informal learning, equity and |

”Do you speak alien?” The ups and downs of a Spanish language preschool program. $49.99 Why should English speaking preschool children learn a second language? The lack of foreign language education in American schools puts English speaking students at a disadvantage in an ever-globalizing world. The Deacon Park Preschool (DPP), in Atlanta, Georgia, established a foreign language (L2) Spanish program in 2003 designed to provide cultural and linguistic sensitivity and awareness. This thesis is a community based applied/action case study of the L2 preschool program that is informed by the researcher’s creation and implementation of the integrated Montessori inspired, naturalistic, fifteen-month program in 2003-2004. This study evaluates the current Spanish program (2007) and explores the sustainability of the previously implemented L2 teaching/learning approach. Data was collected through applied anthropological qualitative methods including field observations and in-depth interviews with teachers, parents, and the director of the DPP. Findings address the paucity of research that focuses specifically on teaching a L2 to preschool students and provide a recommendation for future improvements. Research from this topic addresses issues of program development and sustainability for foreign language programs with limited resources. By providing an evaluation of one innovative approach for second language learning, this work adds to both the theory and practice of creating and sustaining second language enrichment programs for majority language students that can be adapted and applied at other locations. |

”There’s some good karma up in here”: A case study of white school leadership in an urban context. $49.99 As educators work to improve achievement within the current policy environment of accountability and “subgroups,” their attention has been drawn to considerations of race, culture, and learning in schools. Yet few school leaders have the preparation or knowledge to assist teacher learning about these issues.;Theories of culturally relevant pedagogy focus on how teachers can teach subject matter in a culturally appropriate manner, and previous scholarship has considered culturally relevant pedagogy in relation to teaching and learning. This inquiry examines it in relation to leadership content knowledge. Critical race theory offers a lens through which to examine the relationship of beliefs and knowledge when considering race and racism in the American educational system and for further situating an examination of school leadership and cultural competency.;The research questions I address are: (1) What kind of perspective toward students is held by educators in the school? How do these perspectives connect with teaching, learning, and leadership? (2) How is culturally relevant pedagogy represented in the schools? How do school leaders foster or hinder CRP in their schools? (3) In which contexts and events in the practice of school leadership do issues of race, culture, and learning surface? How are the issues mediated by the principal and other school leaders?;This case study of three White principals reveals that they faced many issues of race, culture, and learning, yet tended to be colorblind and colormute. Even when they identified issues, they were reluctant to address them or without resources, thus ignoring situations that could have served as sites of teacher learning. Several White teachers held dynamic and nuanced asset perspectives toward children of color. New teachers in particular learn a “repertoire of racialized and ‘cultural’ comparisons” (Pollock, 2001) as a key component of belonging to their community, a repertoire that knowledgeable school |

”We are all becoming teacher/theorists”: Collaborative inquiry into the intellectual, relational, and political work of learning to teach. $49.99 This study is the result of my work as a teacher educator in an English methods course and a member of an inquiry community I formed with eight of my students, all middle and secondary student English teachers at the University of Pennsylvania. I investigate what was at stake for them in learning to teach English in Philadelphia urban schools in the midst of an aggressive reform agenda, including attempts to improve instruction and student performance through the production and dissemination of mandated curricula calibrated to benchmark exams (Useem, 2005). Through this work, I examine my students’ individual and collaborative inquiries into issues of practice (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009), their interrogation of ideas and discourses of urban teaching, and their construction of their own conceptual frameworks and understandings.;This research contributes to the fields of English education, urban teacher education, practitioner research, and literacy, by critically examining deficit-based instruction models in schools and prevailing understandings of student teachers as ‘novices’; both of these notions inadequately account for the rich array of intellectual and experiential resources that students and teachers bring into urban classrooms. I explore alternative conceptions, analyzing student teachers’ use of sociocultural perspectives on literacy as frameworks for thinking differently about English as a content area and their students’ literacy practices. Through their joint inquiries, this community of student teachers constructed counter-narratives about the promise and potential of urban students, cultivated relational approaches to teaching them, and created emic concepts to address feelings of disequilibrium, conflict, and uncertainty in the classroom. In this research, I regard student teachers’ locations as rich sites for constructing expertise from material experience and mutual inquiry. I argue that learning to teach through collaborative inquiry is a |

”We stranded in school”: Survival literacy through adaptive colorations among high-achieving African American middle school students. $49.99 This study, which examined the literate participation of high-achieving African American sixth graders in a middle school language arts classroom heavily influenced by the demands of preparing students to pass state assessments, is situated at the intersection of calls to recognize, value, and utilize students’ cultural and linguistic resources in classrooms and policy pressures that make doing such a thing seem increasingly challenging. A sociocultural view of learning and literacy was adopted in this research. That is, literacy learning was understood to be a culturally and historically situated, social sense-making activity. Additionally, a critical sociocultural perspective helped reveal how participants in the study negotiated multiple literate identities, employed agency, and exercised power.;Many sociocultural researchers have alluded to or exposed the existence of “hidden literacies” in schools and classrooms. By describing students’ unofficial, unsanctioned, and alternative literacies on the margins and in the underlife of classrooms, these studies have rendered visible students’ multiple and varied communicative experiences, their use of literacy as a tool for constructing identities and forging social relationships, and their capacity for adaptive flexibility across literate situations and contexts. The purpose of this ethnographic case study was to shed further light on hidden literacies by identifying and describing instances of hidden literacies in full view, or literacy hiding in plain sight. Specifically, this study aimed to uncover and illuminate the role students played in the phenomenon of literacy hiding in plain sight.;A theoretical framework of adaptive colorations was used to view and articulate the dimensions and dynamics of literacy hiding in plain sight in this classroom. A Guide to Developing the ICT Curriculum for Early Childhood Education $32.5 This is a book about ICT (Information and Computer Technology) in its broadest sense. The authors show how ICT can contribute to children’s learning; how it can be integrated into a play based curriculum and how it relates to key areas of learning such as collaboration, communication, exploration and socio-dramatic play. The text provides an introduction to the ICT requirements in the UK Foundation Stage Curriculum Guidance, and it also discusses in detail the international relevance and implications of ICT for young children. The book provides a critical account of the ‘digital divide’ and suggests practical strategies for all the individuals and institutions who are working towards the achievement of social justice. It offers concrete guidance for the development of center based practice, and on curriculum integration and the selection of developmentally appropriate educational software. It also explores ergonomic issues, as revealed by research: how should children sit at the computer, for how long and what are the risks? Emphasis is placed on the processes of policy development and the realization of change and there is guidance on the use of development plans and evaluation tools. Using the example of the practice and policy development of one model Early Excellence Centre, the authors map the development of good practice in staff development, children’s learning and their use of ICT, and in working with parents. A wealth of information and resources are provided. The book draws on two major European research projects that generated rich examples of good practice: curriculum guidance materials developed as part of the EU funded Developmentally Appropriate Technology in Early Childhood (DATEC) project and the authors’ evaluation of the IBM KidSmart initiative. The book will be essential to all those working in elementary education and to teacher educators and policy and curriculum developers in primary schools. |

A Hybrid Web-Based Learning Model $61.99 The use of web based learning in primary schools, especially in South Africa, has been neglected to a large degree. There are various reasons for this including lack of resources and qualified personnel. The aim of this book was the design of a hybrid web based learning model for primary school mathematics especially in the teaching and learning of perimeter and area. Mathematics was chosen as a focus area because of the poor results attained by learners and university students in this subject. The introduction of networked computer laboratories to previously disadvantaged South African primary schools enables the use of computers as powerful tools to analyze the thought processes of learners during their early encounters with mathematics. This book shows that a blended learning approach using a networked computing environment to facilitate the teaching and learning of perimeter and area produces a significantly enhanced learning experience for learners as compared to learners utilizing conventional teaching and learning methods only. The findings and methods illustrated in this book would be of use to educators as well as teacher training institutions. |

A Movement Without Marches $22.95 Lisa Levenstein reframes highly charged debates over the origins of chronic African American poverty and the social policies and political struggles that led to the postwar urban crisis. Her analysis follows poor black women as they traveled from some of Philadelphia’’s most impoverished neighborhoods into its welfare offices, courtrooms, public housing, schools, and hospitals, laying claim to an unprecedented array of government benefits and services. With these resources came new constraints, as public officials frequently responded to women’’s efforts by limiting benefits and attempting to control their personal lives. Countering stereotypes that have long plagued public debate, Levenstein offers a new paradigm for understanding postwar U.S. history. |

A Path to Follow: Learning to Listen to Parents $4.77 The diverse and difficult needs of today’s children far outstrip the ability of any one institution to meet them. Yet one of the richest resources for understanding a child’s early learning experiences-parents-is quite often the most frequently overlooked. A Path to Follow suggests that parent “stories” can be a highly effective, collaborative tool for accessing knowledge that may not be obvious, but would obviously be of benefit.Pat Edwards and her coauthors have here defined “stories” as narratives gained from open-ended conversations and/or interviews, where parents respond to questions designed to shed light on traditional and nontraditional early literacy activities in the home. After all, as a child’s first and most important teacher, a parent can offer memories of specific formative interactions, observations on early learning efforts, and thoughts on how their own backgrounds have impacted a child’s attitude toward school. In sharing their anecdotes and observations, parents give us the keys to unlock a vault of social, emotional, and educational variables. The secondary benefit to the story approach, of course, is the empowerment that parents feel when they are given the chance to participate in a personally meaningful way-one that respects their viewpoint. As parents and schools continue to wrestle with prodigious challenges-shifting family demographics, time constraints, cultural divides, privacy issues, and of course, economics-stories remain a nonthreatening and practical vehicle for collaboration. With its step-by-step approach to creating parent story programs, sample questions, case studies, and useful guidelines on collecting and interpreting data, A Path to Follow will be hailed as a detailed and innovative roadmap to involving the whole community in a child’s education. |

A Problem-based Approach for Management Education: Preparing Managers for Action $150.3 The past two decades have witnessed an unrelenting expansion of management education around the world. At the same time, however, influential scholars – Mintzberg, Bennis, Pfeffer and others – have levelled pointed critiques at these programs questioning their quality and relevance, as well as their approaches to teaching and learning.‘Preparing Managers for Action’ is a timely contribution for management schools as well as other higher education institutions seeking the means to increase the relevance and quality of their professional education programs. The book describes the use of problem-based learning (PBL) in management education. PBL is an active learning approach first pioneered in medical education, but whose use has grown steadily in a variety of professional fields over the past two decades. The authors draw upon their experience in using PBL in a broad array of management education programs at the Bachelor, Master, Doctoral and Executive levels, in North American and in Asia. This book is designed to provide both novice and experienced users of PBL with resources for designing and implementing problem-based management education. The book provides the novice with useful theoretical and practical background on how design a PBL curriculum, use PBL in a classroom, and develop PBL materials. At the same time, the book will challenge experienced users of PBL and case teaching to extend their applications through the use of learning technologies and more systematic approaches to assessment and curriculum design. |

THE EMANCIPATION OF CHILDHOOD The ninejteejith, .century witnessed a very remarkable v revolution mjthe, statusj £ the child in America. As the vastness of the unfolding continent and its needs impressed themselves more and more on the minds of men, the valuation placed on childhood rose. In a society whose population is small as compared with available resources, children always occupy an important position. Moreover, as in colonial days, child-rearing seemed to present special difficulties in the New World. The climate was different from that of the historic habitat of the race. As late as 1848 an Englishwoman remarked that “the difficulty of rearing children until they have passed the second summer and gone through the troubles of teething, makes the American mothers • more solicitous than we are in English nurseries.” Another writer said: “Children’s diseases are hasty and come with a fell swoop, desolating cities and hearts.” The utter dependence of the frontier children on the parents’ care in absence of physician’s aid increased the parents’ burden of responsibility. Pioneer women textit{ suckled their own children and cared for them themselves. Until schools and churches came, child-training was of necessity exclusively a family affair; consequently of the simplest character. The pioneer was not sentimental. His children were never “little cherubs,” “angels sent from heaven,” but generally “tow-headed” and very earthly responsibilities. . . He looked forward anxiously to the day whenthe boys should be able to assist him in the field or fight the Indians, and the girls to help their mother make and mend. In a new world men face the future and worship, not ancestors, but posterity. “For the children” was the motto of many a pioneer, who endured the wilderness hardships |

A case study of an academy to determine whether or not it is a smaller learning community and to identify the policies of the school and school district that sustain it. $49.99 The lack of academic achievement in large urban public schools has created a need for school districts to identify means to improve schools and satisfy the No Child Left Behind Act enacted in 2002. When public schools were first created, they were generally small and homogeneous, reflecting the communities in which they were situated. As communities grew, as well as the need for a more educated workforce to support them, high schools were consolidated to better utilize resources. As schools became larger they became less personal; consequently, only the most focused and disciplined students were succeeding. Other students were either dropping out or failing to achieve academically.;Thus, the small schools movement was initiated, especially in the urban areas. Research has indicated that students achieve more when they are in situations that provide them with a personal touch. Since large schools could not be demolished and replaced with smaller schools, school districts began to explore how smaller settings could be created within the large school. Successful smaller learning communities were identified as having five elements: personalization, autonomy, identity, instructional focus, and accountability.;The purpose of this study was to examine an academy in a local urban school district to determine if it operated as a small learning community and if the school district supported it as a smaller learning community. This qualitative study examined a preexisting academy that could be identified as a smaller learning community within an urban school. The following methods were used to gather pertinent data over a period of one academic school year: interviews, focus groups, observations, and examination of archived documents.;The findings of the study indicated that the academy did not meet the criteria of a smaller learning community nor did the school district support the concept as there were no policies in place to sustain it. The research examined an academy |

A community intervention strategy to increase immigrant youth resilience. $49.99 In institutions of higher learning across Arizona, undocumented students often go unnoticed. Many of these students were brought into the U.S. as young children and many have graduated from Arizona high schools. Arizona’s Proposition 300, implemented in 2007, has impacted undocumented students by denying them state sponsored financial aid and in-state classification for tuition. This has resulted in a growing concern as to how undocumented students and college staff are going to deal with this mandate. In this study, the following two research questions were developed to investigate this issue: (1) How will this mandate impact undocumented students’ lives?; and, (2) What are the obstacles these individuals will face when they can no longer afford a higher education? Using an action research approach, a website was created to provide the undocumented students as well as the community information about Proposition 300, college access and resources available. Data were collected through administration web statistics, a 42 question survey, blog postings and follow-up interviews. The website was open to any interne user, which allowed people from various geographic locations to participate. Quantitative analyses gathered from website statistics indicated significant activity from participants. The total number of website visits from participants was 752, viewing 3,310 total pages and averaging 6:44 minutes per visit. Participants visited the website from various locations throughout the U.S. and from Mexico and Puerto Rico. Of the participants (n = 299), many indicated they were female, students and Hispanic. Most participants found the website useful and confirmed high resilience characteristics and, due to the website, felt optimistic about their educational future. Qualitative analyses gathered from survey data (n = 299) and blog postings (n = 64), indicated that the greatest concern of undocumented students was that they could not afford the increase in |

A study of processes and perceptions of educational decision makers: Looking at organizational trust in critical decisions. $69 Literature from the 1990s has professed that not only is trust a key ingredient for a business's viability and sustainability, it is vital to organizations that want to succeed in a global economy. As a consequence of organizational restructuring, downsizing or integrating acquired companies as part of a merger, companies must depend on diverse and remote teams working together, in order to succeed. In this effort, trust is especially critical. One specific type of organization, the United States' Education system is struggling to consistently reach achievement levels and is under continual scrutiny, in light of repeated poor performance against recently mandated standards. After reviewing a several key studies focusing on elementary and middle schools in an urban setting, Hoy and Tschannen-Morran (1999), Bryk and Schneider (2002), Kochanek (2005), the intent of this study is to explore the dynamics of decision making in connection with the concept of trust, specifically, the perceptions of key decision-makers in education. Using a purposeful sample of key decision makers in Human Resources involved in actual decision-making situations, this research examines how existing components of trust are either central or peripheral to the perceptions of decision makers across a spectrum of issues. Where prior studies were conducted in an urban setting and looked at trust from the viewpoint of principals to teachers, teacher to teacher and sometimes parents to teachers and principals, this inquiry seeks evidence as to the perceptions of those in suburban district offices. This group is very involved in decisions that affect all levels of the educational organization and this paper seeks to understand their perspective and give them a voice. |

A training program for special education teachers: Systemic classroom interventions designed to reduce sensory symptoms in children in special education classrooms. $49.99 Sensory deficits coexist with other behavioral, emotional, and physical conditions in young children who meet criteria for special education services in the public schools. Literature suggests that sensory deficits may contribute to some of the problematic behaviors children display; however, there are few resources available to assist teachers in providing an environmentally appropriate educational setting for these children. This dissertation reviews the literature relating to sensory deficits and existing interventions. It also develops and structures an appropriate training program for special education teachers. Teacher training consists of 4 separate modules occurring on 4 separate occasions. The first module orients teachers to sensory issues in young children, and the second module focuses on environmental interventions and the use of materials readily available in their classrooms. Finally, the third and fourth modules concentrate on approaches to working with challenging children. It is hypothesized that an appropriate school structure will assist in decreasing behavioral symptoms due to sensory deficits. In addition, a fifth module targeting school administrators focuses on the assessment of sensory deficits, the importance of identifying these deficits, and approaches to working with these deficits outside of the classroom. |

Academic Libraries in Urban and Metropolitan Areas: A Management Handbook $83.87 Solutions to the unique problems of academic libraries in urban and metropolitan areas are provided in this professional handbook. Issues faced by the administrators of these libraries can differ markedly from those encountered by their counterparts in residential college towns, with service demands emanating from both the surrounding community and their own academic community. Written by experienced urban university librarians, each chapter addresses issues unique to the in-city academic library. Reaching out to their communities to establish links with business, industry, and other libraries, the administrators of the urban/metropolitan libraries require a great degree of diplomacy and management skills. Service demands arising from urban high schools place additional pressures on limited resources. This handbook shows how the use of new technologies can assist the urban academic librarian in fashioning services for a nonresident faculty, as well as a usually older student body, comprised of many international and part-time students. The characteristics of city living and their impact on information-seeking behavior are discussed. Other topics covered are resource sharing, setting fees, staff and collection security, environmental pollution and space requirements. |
