What GCSEs do you need for a career in psycology?

So I’m in year 9 in the UK and I have to choose my options, I would love a career in psycology, but I don’t know which subjects to take,
I have to take:
English language & Literature GCSEs
Mathematics GCSE
Statistics (in maths) GCSE
Triple Science GCSEs
Religious Studies GCSE
ICT OCR national level 2
1 language (I’m going to take spanish)
History or geography (I’m taking History modern worlds, about International relations, 1919-1939 and The actions of the great powers -USA and Germany- 1917-1945)

This leaves me with one more option and I don’t know what to take!
Help me!
Optional:
Art GCSE- which I would fail!
Business studies GCSE- which is supposed to be rubbish and boring
Child development GCSE
Drama GCSE- I could probably pass
French GCSE
P.E GCSE
Peforming arts BTEC – I could probably pass

please help me!!

I second what Tony said, and would add that although the topic of remaining subjects you choose isn’t important for a psychology career, the grades you attain WILL be of interest to universities/employers/institutes – so very carefully choose subjects you hopefully will enjoy and be good at and forget whether they will be relevant to your prospective career.

''Mandela went to China...and India too'': Musical cultures of childhood in South Africa.

”Mandela went to China…and India too”: Musical cultures of childhood in South Africa.

$49.99

The cultural landscape of South Africa is reflected in the songs and games of young children whose music often embodies the social and political history of the world around them. My research with young children in the Limpopo province of South Africa is indicative of how children of similar ages identify with the idea of South Africa as a nation and how children use music as an educational tool to engage with their social and cultural identities.;This dissertation examines how music, education and the media impact the culture of childhood in South Africa and draws on the political and social history of South Africa that is enmeshed in the musical education of children today. The purpose of the study is to understand how young children utilize and experience music as a tool to explore, and consequently educate themselves in relationship to their social and cultural histories. Based on scholarship that bridges the fields of music education, sociology, child development, media studies and ethnomusicology, this dissertation aims to outline how children’s musical cultures are not mere copycats of adult musical systems, but rather intricate memes, or units of cultural information, that are propagated and sustained within the culture of childhood.;Contributing to an understanding of the role of music in children’s lives in Limpopo, this dissertation examines how music contributes to identity formation in childhood. This process is explored through an examination of local, national and global influences on the musical language of childhood in South Africa. From handclapping songs to traditional music, from commercials to programs such as Takalani Sesame, the musical worlds of children in Limpopo give voice to an understanding of how children engage with and sustain unique musical cultures.

Child Welfare and Child Well-Being: New Perspectives From the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being

Child Welfare and Child Well-Being: New Perspectives From the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being

$74.95

The landmark National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW) study represents the first effort to gather nationally representative data, based on first-hand reports, about the well-being of children and families who encounter the child welfare system. NSCAW’s findings offer an unprecedented national source of data that describe the developmental status and functional characteristics of children who come to the attention of child protective services. Much more than a simple history of placements or length of stay in foster care, NSCAW data chart the trajectory of families across service pathways for a multi-dimensional view of their specific needs. The NSCAW survey is longitudinal, contains direct assessments and reports about each child from multiple sources, and is designed to address questions of relations among children’s characteristics and experiences, their development, their pathways through the child welfare service system, their service needs, their service receipt, and, ultimately, their well-being over time. The chapters in this rich synthesis of NSCAW data represent thoughtful and increasingly sophisticated approaches to the problems highlighted in the study and in child welfare research in general. The authors capitalize on the longitudinal, multidimensional data to capture the experiences of children and families from the time they are investigated by CPS though multiple follow-up points, and to consider the interdependent nature of the traditional child welfare outcomes of safety, permanence, and well-being. The topics covered not only are critical to child welfare practice and policy, but also are of compelling interest to other child service sectors such as health, mental health, education, and juvenile justice. The authors of chapters in this volume are esteemed researchers within psychology, social work, economics, and public health. Together they represent the future of child welfare research, showcasing the potential of NSCAW

 Children's Perceptions of Violence

Children’s Perceptions of Violence

$116.99

This study examined children’s perceptions of the prevalence, incidence, and impact of violence experienced or witnessed by them and explored the factors that might mitigate and reduce its impact. A national survey of New Zealand children, aged 9 to 13 years, with a representative sample of 2,077 children from 28 randomly selected schools of various sizes, geographic areas and socioeconomic neighbourhoods was undertaken. Results showed high prevalence rates of both direct and indirect physical, emotional, and sexual violence. All types of violence involving adults were rated higher than violence involving children. The study also examined the ethical considerations and philosophy underpinning research that involves children. Guided by Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the results supported the controversial ethical decision to adopt a passive consent procedure. The study demonstrated children’s competence to express the ways in which violence has affected them. Conclusions are that effective development of policy and provision should be based on data that reflects children’s perceptions of the violence in the context of their own lives.

Disparities in School Readiness: How Families Contribute to Transitions into School

Disparities in School Readiness: How Families Contribute to Transitions into School

$100

Significant disparities exist in children’s behavioral and learning capacities that support successful transitions into school. In this new volume, leading researchers from a variety of disciplines review the latest data on how families influence their children’s transitions into school. The inequalities that exist in school readiness, the roots of the inequalities, and the ways in which families exacerbate or minimize these inequalities, are explored. The book concludes with a review of policies and programs that represent the best practices for how families, schools and communities can address these disparities. Each of the following topics is explored through a lead essay followed by three critiques:Inequalities in school readiness and the community, school, and family characteristics that contribute to these inequalities.Family processes and contextual conditions that impact the acquisition of literacy, numeracy, language, and cognitive skills. The role that extracurricular activities play in shaping children’s school achievement, including differences based on gender, ethnicity, race, and socioeconomic status.Family processes underlying the development of behavioral control and its impact on school readiness.Disparities in School Readiness paints a compelling, interdisciplinary portrait using a variety of types of data and data sets, including longitudinal data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development’s Study of Early Childhood and recent analyses of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study from the National Center for Education Statistics. Interdisciplinary in nature, this new book appeals to researchers in family studies, human development, education, psychology, social work, sociology, economics, and public policy interested in improving children’s school transitions.

Distributing leadership to teachers through a district level Math Council.

Distributing leadership to teachers through a district level Math Council.

$108

The publicly reported California Standards Test (CST) and No Child Left Behind annual yearly progress (AYP) reports create a laser sharp focus on achievement. These instruments of national and state accountability systems place instructional practice at the center of the debate. Schools can no longer tolerate this division of effort if they are to insure that each child achieves proficiency in language arts and mathematics. Leaders must find ways to capitalize on teacher expertise and develop teacher leaders among the ranks. Current literature conceptualizes distributed leadership as an organization where members possess expert knowledge and are empowered to participate in a collective action toward a common goal. As educational institutions seek ways to restructure themselves according to their primary functions, teaching and learning, distributed leadership emerges as an opportunity to recognize teachers as natural organizational leaders.;In this descriptive case study, a district superintendent, union president, four principals, and twelve teachers who participated in a three-year Math Council were interviewed. Data analysis revealed how historical teacher leadership partnerships in the district, as well as the trusting relationship between the superintendent and union president, influenced the architecture and development of the Math Council, charged with improving math achievement. The Math Council included teachers and administrators, working collaboratively, to develop math recommendations for the superintendent. Further data analysis revealed that a curriculum focus was helpful to distribute leadership, at the district level, to improve math. However, the following areas surfaced as needing attention: clarity of the task, roles and responsibilities of the council, and clarity of expectations.;Nine components emerged, on a systems level, to distribute leadership. Conclusions highlight the importance of three of these components: trust, collaboration, and

 Dynamics of Inequality And Poverty

Dynamics of Inequality And Poverty

$142.43

This volume consists of a number of papers related to the theme of the dynamics of inequality and poverty. These are subdivided into four separate parts. The five chapters in Part I of this volume are concerned with inequality and poverty over extended time periods. Bandyopadhyay and Cowell deal with the concept of ???vulnerability??? in the context of income mobility of the poor. Biewen studies the extent and the composition of chronic poverty in Germany, comparing the results with the United Kingdom and the United States. Van de Ven describes a dynamic microsimulation model of cohort labour earnings based on the Australian population aged between 20 and 55 years, and considers how the widening social gap between the Australia and the UK is reflected by their redistributive systems, through the use of static and dynamic microsimulation. Kelly analyses the lifetime distribution of net worth in Australia using a dynamic microsimulation model to project the cross-sectional and lifetime asset holdings of a 5-year birth cohort over a period of 40 years. In Part II, the issue of intergenerational transfers of poverty is considered. Corak compares generational earnings mobility and the reasons for the degree to which the long run labour market success of children is related to that of their parents across countries. He provides a framework for understanding the underlying causal process as well as the conception of equality of opportunity, as a guide for public policy.. Grawe uses data from the British National Childhood Development Study to examine the quality-quantity trade-off in fertility in multiple measures of child achievement. Maani examines the link between parentalincome and other resources during adolescent years, and higher education choices of the offspring at age 18, using a recent longitudinal data set from New Zealand. Part III is concerned with inequality over time. First, Wolff examines US inequality since the late 1940s, investigati

Economic and Human Development in Contemporary India: Cronyism and Fragility

$127.8

This book deals with issues in economic development in India. It highlights those factors that are indicative of India’s emergence in the global economy yet indicates negative “trickle down” effects, such as malnutrition, poverty, bonded labourers, high adult unemployment and the widespread use of child labour.Focusing on structural deficiencies for a steady growth rate, and how to make growth inclusive, the book examines duality in development and the factors standing between national economic prosperity and human development. The author analyses issues concerning international trade, technology, access to food, inequality and poverty, and the “catching up” of developing countries. A novel approach to the analysis of the Indian economy and other developing countries in the 21st century, this book advocates development as a form of governance. With India as a case study, this book provides a solid framework for looking at developing economies which will be useful to policy-makers and to graduate and post-doctoral students and researchers in the areas of development studies and economics, industrialisation and structural change.

Epidemic: The Rot of American Culture, Absentee and Permissive Parenting, and the Resultant Plague of Joyless, Selfish Children

$0.99

From an esteemed child psychiatrist: a bold, fresh, and controversial look at the faddish child-rearing practices that have created a nation of children who are depressed, alienated, often amoral, and all too often violent. The shock of the Columbine shootings and other school violence has generated a national debate, and there’s a dawning realization that something incomprehensible is happening: our privileged, pampered children are turning into monsters at an alarming rate. With years of study and first-hand experience, Dr. Robert Shaw exposes the roots of what he calls The Epidemic: the violence and the more subtle behaviour problems that are jeopardizing a generation. In this eye-opening book, Dr. Shaw explains that the “advanced” parenting methods experts have promoted for the last thirty years have helped to create a nation of children who are detached loners, unable to form meaningful relationships. From infancy through the teen years, Dr. Shaw provides a map back to sanity that tracks specific misguided parenting techniques and shows parents how to get and keep their children on track and create the environment necessary for a healthy psychological future. Some of the important ground Dr. Shaw covers includes: The myths and realities of bonding and attachment How to recognize when day care is working – and when it isn’t Landmarks to look for in your children’s moral and ethical development Self-centeredness versus self-esteem Keeping the media from mugging your child What can be done with a child who is out of control Dr. Shaw challenges us to confront a very real problem, then helps us take steps forward using common sense and humanity. The Epidemic calls us to become better parents—and feel better about the choices we make for our children.

Free Range Kids: Giving Our Children the Freedom We Had Without Going Nuts with Worry

$24.99

FREE RANGE KIDS has become a national movement, sparked by the incredible response to Lenore Skenazy’s piece about allowing her 9-year-old ride the subway alone in NYC. Parent groups argued about it, bloggers, blogged, spouses became uncivil with each other, and the media jumped all over it. This book debunks dangerous myths and advocates rational care with Free Range Parenting Commandments, including: KNOW WHEN TO WORRY (AND NOT) — Playdates and Axe Murders: How to Tell the Difference NEVER LISTEN TO EXPERTS — Who Knew You Were Doing Everything Wrong — Them EAT CHOCOLATE — Give Halloween Back to the Trick or Treaters TURN OFF THE 24 HOUR NEWS — Go Easy on “Law & Order” too  STOP THINKING LIKE A LAWYER — Some Risks are Strength Builders STUDY HISTORY — Your 10-year-old Would Have Been Forging Horse Shoes (or at least delivering papers) FAIL — It’s the New Succeed LISTEN TO YOUR KIDS — They’re sick of Being Babied (except the actual babies, of course) LISTEN TO YOUR PARENTS — They raised you, right? And you’re still alive. RELAX — Not every little thing you do impacts your child’s development, unless you smother or inspire rebellion A lot of parents today, Skenazy says, see no difference between letting their kids walk to school and letting them walk through a firing range. Any risk is seen as too much risk. But if you try to prevent every possible danger or difficult in your child’s everyday life, that child never gets a chance to grow up. We parents have to realize that the greatest risk of all just might be trying to raise a child who never encounters choice orindependence.

Languages of Education: Protestant Legacies, National Identities, and Global Aspirations

Languages of Education: Protestant Legacies, National Identities, and Global Aspirations

$140

In this landmark contribution to the study of the formation of the modern school, Daniel Tröhler applies one of the most recognized methods of historical research to an analysis of the “language” of the academic discipline of education. Arguing the value of looking at languages rather than arguments–langues rather than paroles–this method of historical research is used to examine the background of different philosophies, theories, or arguments of education, specifically republicanism and Protestantism. Tröhler’s argument is that such analysis is essential to tracing back educational arguments to the ideological core of their concerns, and thus to understanding in international perspective the historical development of education systems and organizations and to evaluating their different theoretical and political approaches and claims. Elegantly written, with the historian’s attention to archival material, this book enables the reader to understand the complex and different social, cultural, religious, and political context factors embedded in the “thought” of schooling and its objects of scrutiny–its notions of the child and teacher. Languages of Education is essential reading for scholars and students across the fields of history and philosophy of education, curriculum studies, and comparative education.

National health insurance in Ghana: Politics, adverse selection, and the use of child health services.

$49.99

In August 2003, the Ghanaian Government made history by implementing the first National Health Insurance System (NHIS) in sub-Saharan Africa. Within three years, over half of the country had voluntarily enrolled into the NHIS. This study had three objectives: (1) Qualitatively analyze the political and governance-related dimensions of the development of the NHIS; (2) Analyze the impact of the NHIS on the dynamics of intra-household resource allocation of healthcare to children under 5; (3) Test whether there is evidence that voluntary household enrollment has led to adverse selection in the Ghanaian NHIS. Qualitative methods employed included stakeholder interviews and extensive secondary data analysis using grounded theory. Quantitative analysis, using a two-part model, was conducted using the Nkoranza insurance claims database, which comprised of 64,859 individuals and 7,950 children under the age of five from 17,700 households. Our qualitative analysis finds that the political nature of health reform requires strong institutional mechanisms to safeguard transparency and accountability throughout the policy development process. Thus, we conclude that countries and their development partners must incorporate governance-related activities into their long-term health sector development plans to maximize the impact of public health policy. Our quantitative analysis reveals that while the NHIS does improve equity of resource allocation among sick children, household-level factors unrelated to the cost of medical care, such as opportunity cost, beliefs and attitudes about formal health services, and nonmedical cost of care, remain barriers to care-seeking for children under 5. We assert that insurance is not the silver bullet to improving utilization of child health services: policymakers must also focus on community-level interventions aimed at addressing household-related factors that influence care-seeking behavior. Regarding adverse selection, we find that the

Ngecha

$8.56

Ngecha is the monumental and intimate study of modernization and nationalization in rural Africa in the early years following Kenyan independence in 1963, as experienced by the people of Ngecha, a village outside Nairobi. From 1968 to 1973 Ngecha was a research site of the Child Development Research Unit, a team which brought together Kenyan and non-Kenyan social scientists under the leadership of John Whiting and Beatrice Blyth Whiting. The study documents how families adapted to changing opportunities and conditions as their former colony became a modern nation, and the key role that women played as agents of change as they became small-scale cash-crop farmers and entrepreneurs. Mothers modified the culture of their parents to meet the evolving national economy, and they participated in the shift from an agrarian to a wage economy in ways that transformed their workloads and perceptions of isolation and individualism within and between households, thereby challenging traditional family-based morals and obligations. Their children, in turn, experienced evolving educational practices and achievement expectations. The elders faced new situations as well as new modes of treatment. Completing this valuable record of a nation in transition are the long-term reassessments of the observations and conclusions of the research team, and a description of Ngecha today as viewed by Kenyans who participated in the original study.

Organized Activities As Contexts of Development: Extracurricular Activities, After-School and Community Programs

Organized Activities As Contexts of Development: Extracurricular Activities, After-School and Community Programs

$160

School-aged children in the U.S. and other Western nations spend almost half of their waking hours in leisure activities. For some, out-of-school time is perceived as inconsequential or even counterproductive to the health and well-being of young persons. Recently, however, there has been a growing recognition that—along with family, peers, and school—the organized activities in which some youth participate during these hours are important contexts of emotional, social, and civic development. They provide opportunities for young persons to learn and develop competencies that are largely neglected by schools. At the same time, communities and national governments are now channeling considerable resources into creating organized activities for young people’s out-of-school time. This volume brings together a multidisciplinary, international group of experts to provide conceptual, empirical, and policy-relevant advances in research on children’s and adolescents’ participation in the developmental contexts represented by extracurricular activities, and after-school and community programs. Organized Activities As Contexts of Development: Extracurricular Activities, After-School and Community Programs

$64.95

Prejudice: Children and the Development of Individual and National Identity

Prejudice: Children and the Development of Individual and National Identity

How do some little angels turn into bigoted little monsters? How and when do children start to realize who they are and which groups they belong to? How do they view other races, other members of society, people from different religions? This book is a study of how people’s attitudes towards each other develop from an early age. Based on empirical research of children aged 5 -11, it explores the nature of categorization and stereotypes – from groups to nations. Following the development of a child’s sense of identity the author shows how snobbery, xenophobia, chauvinism and blinkered attitudes to others are acquired through time. While frighteningly forthright, the book’s positive message is that strong prejudice (eg racism and chauvinism) is preventable.

Raising the well adjusted gymnast: A manual for gymnastics coaches.

$49.99

The purpose of this study was to develop a manual for gymnastics coaches of six to eleven year old girls in order to provide guidance for developing an environment in the gym that fosters positive development across multiple domains. More specifically, the goal of the manual is to help coaches integrate concepts of developmental and systemic theories into their daily coaching practices. The manual will help coaches identify developmental issues and address them in order to make the athletic experience one that helps raise well adjusted gymnasts. The literature review is separated into four major sections. The first section discusses the historical development of sports in our society. The second section is dedicated to the developmental tasks that are associated with the late childhood stage of development for females. The third section discusses the family systems theories and models that are applicable to the development of child athletes. The fourth and final section of the literature review focuses on the coaching profession. The method involved using a semi-structured interview to obtain information from Massachusetts gymnastics coaches. A mass e-mail was sent out to all coaches registered with the state. Then individual interviews were conducted. Also coaches were interviewed during the Talent Opportunity Program training camp held at the national training center. A consultation was also conducted with a sports consultant. A thematic analysis of the information obtained from the interviews was conducted. Running themes from the interviews, and the literature and my personal experience were formatted into a manual to help coaches create environments that foster positive development across multiple domains. The results of the semi-structured interviews and the consultation highlighted the lack of structured, child-specific training that gymnastics coaches undergo. While the coaches all spoke about a passion for helping children, none of them had received

What factors enable individuals to overcome adverse childhoods and move on to rewarding lives in adulthood Drawing on data collected from two of Britain’s richest research resources for the study of human development, the 1958 National Child Development Study and the 1970 British Cohort Study, Schoon investigates the phenomenon of ‘resilience’ – the ability to adjust positively to adverse conditions. Comparing the experiences of over 30,000 individuals born twelve years apart, Schoon examines the transition from childhood into adulthood and the assumption of work and family related roles among individuals born in 1958 and 1970 respectively. The study focuses on academic attainment among high and low risk individuals, but also considers behavioural adjustment, health and psychological well-being, as well as the stability of adjustment patterns in times of social change. This is a major work of reference and synthesis, that makes an important contribution to the study of lifelong development.

Accountability at the federal and state levels has put increasing pressure on teachers and schools to raise the achievement of all students to a level of Proficient as defined by No Child Left Behind. National trends in standardized tests confirm the existence of achievement gaps for certain ethnic-minority student populations. One particular subgroup, English Learners, faces numerous challenges to be successful in school. Specifically these students struggle to master complex vocabulary found in state-adopted materials. As a result they fail to progress in general education classes and are possibly inappropriately referred for special education services. Even though much is known about academically at-risk secondary students, little is known about the implementation and feasibility of Response to Intervention as a possible alternative to failure in the general education classroom. This study, a pre/post quasi-experimental and non-specific treatment group design, investigated the effects of RTI on underachieving 9th grade English Learners at-risk for failure. Over a six week daily treatment in high school English language support classes, findings revealed that English Learners' understanding of vocabulary increased through the use of morphemes. Teachers participated in pre and post focus groups which explored teacher understanding of Response to Intervention, language acquisition theory, the importance of vocabulary development, the use of morphemes to teach vocabulary, and teacher practices of student referral for special education services. Implications for designing RTI at the secondary level are discussed. Recommendations for improving teacher practices are offered, with an emphasis on the importance of what can be learned from the results by schools making decisions for supporting English Learners as they move through high school.

A comprehensive review of the uses and interpretation of anthropometric references undertaken by WHO in the early 1990s concluded that new growth curves were needed to replace the existing international reference. To develop new standards, a multi-country study was carried out to collect primary growth data and related information from 8440 healthy breastfed infants and young children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultural settings (Brazil, Ghana, India, Norway, Oman, and the USA). The first set of growth standards (length/height-for-age, weight-for-age, weight-for-length, weight-for-height and body mass index-for-age) was published in April 2006. This report presents the second set of growth standards (head circumference-for-age, arm circumference-for-age, triceps skinfold-for-age, and subscapular skinfold-for-age). The standards depict normal early childhood growth under optimal environmental conditions and can be used to assess children everywhere, regardless of ethnicity socioeconomic status and type of feeding. This report will be useful to pediatricians and other healthcare providers, nutritionists, policy makers, researchers, national institutes of health, schools of medicine, and professional associations.
