Major In Child Development

major in child development
If you want to be a teacher, is it better to major in liberal studies or child development?

I’m currently a junior in college majoring in liberal studies. After taking a few liberal studies courses, I’ve realized they don’t prepare you to be a teacher as much as i expected. Child development, on the other hand, teaches you how to work with children and gives you a greater understanding of the psychology of children. I was thinking about changing my major to child development. Although it will put me a semester behind, I think it could be worth it. Now my main concern is when applying to teach, do the schools recommend those with liberal studies majors or those with child development majors?

It depends on what age children you choose to work with. Child Development is a good major to teach the lower grades. If you plan to teach jr. high or high school you need to major in a solid subject such as social studies, english or math.

$146.99

This chronologically-organized, child and adolescent development text features an integrative approach to the study of development with a distinguished emphasis on multi-cultural issues. Through this integrative framework, Owens explores the dynamic interplay of psychological, biological, sociological, and anthropological factors as they contribute to the developmental process. Through this multi-disciplinary lens, Owens presents the major theories and research of the field and provides strong links to the application of these ideas to daily life and career. Owens further expands the integrative theme to include a respectable and fair treatment of issues related to diversity and culture by “integrating” coverage throughout the text as well as through a separate chapter (2). This inclusiveness provides a uniquely modern, scholarly and complete view of the child and adolescent development process.
